New bulls in Genex lineup

Six Mile has raised some good bulls- but Genex sure doesn't give much info on EPD's, frame size, etc...Looks like you are shooting in the dark.....
 
I would have to have considerably more information about the bull before I would consider using him. Reasonably good phenotype.

That's funny they aren't posted because they were in six mile's sale catalogue-he should be pretty good they've bred alot of good cattle over the years. Alot of Red Angus breeders up here got their start with share cows from Ken Fraser. I bought my first Red Angus bull from him about a century ago.
 
I saw the Sakic bull a week before the Six Mile sale. He was impressive! He is long and thick and I'd guess him to be a frame 6 or 6.5. Having said that, he certainly has a lot of feed in him as he was shown as a calf and most probably couldn't be fairly compared with his herd mates. His feet are OK for a Red Angus, not perfect but OK.

I am dismayed at all the foot problems in the Red Angus breed. We were looking for a red bull for our purebred red herd this year and I passed on a lot of good bulls because of their feet. Some breeders are not paying enough attention to feet, IMO. We finally found a good one in southern Alberta.

I am no expert on red angus, but phenotypically he looks very good to me, maybe overconditioned, but sound.

Interested to hear what made you think he has "Reasonably good phenotype"

You can say that again about the feet-imagine what it's like up in our country Seth-those meadow pastures don't do much to wear feet down. Angus in general aren't as good footed as they could be but I think the reds are worse than the blacks. A breed that might have some other issues but are on the average pretty good footed are Salers. The best footed bull I've ever owned was a black South Devon bull he had perfect feet and legs as far as I could see and lasted till he was nine. He moved out like a big cat. Whose place in southern Alberta did you find a bull at-my nephew finally shipped that old 3080 son I sold him-he only bred till he was 12. Hope your catching some showers-we could use some heat to get grass coming here.

The bull has a fine phenotypical appearance! I would like to see a better tail setting, although that is minor. The main reasons I would hesitate to use him are because I can't SEE his feet, which precludes an objective opinion. But from what I see, he should improve most herds - assuming his feet are acceptable. His Dam has a beautiful udder, which is all in his favor!

The missing feet could just be an accident.
I really dont believe in those.
Most of the time in these "Dressed up" pictures its what they DONT show or tell you that bites you on the butt.
With that said He is really good looking an would work on most herds.

I don't necessarily like every breed or every bull the Genex people include in their added attractions catalog ; but I salute them for giving us 32 breeds to select from I just wish they would hire a decent web designer. Looking at a white page, with a lite blue text in a pastel blue/green text box in the smallest font that would be visible to the human eye (and I have a 19" monitor) is actually painful.

It continues to amaze me that people are so hung up with these magic numbers. The numbers are only as accurate as the data that goes in. Obviously every breeder has different environmental factors to consider when using a bull. I just thought that he was good looking bull that had a different twist of pedigree compared to Cherokee Canyon. After all look at the mess the breed is in after using CC for his numbers!

Seth just curious what bull you bought. Could you post his tattoo or registration #.
 
The red bull we bought is SKG 171S from Shoderee Red Angus at Pincher Creek and he was Lot 65 and the second high selling bull in their sale at $7000. He is long bodied, with excellent muscle expression, big testicles and really good feet. He is a son of Red U-2 Maxxum 363N and his dam is an Elite dam. He was down in the sale order so we thought we might steal him but he was too good for others not to find him too.

Shoderee and Bad Lands Black Angus had a rip roaring sale with their rancher customers really appreciating their no nonsense bulls. This sale had the strongest rancher support of any sale I have been to in a long time. They have a lot of calving ease bulls which their customers were willing to pay for. We bred one of their calving ease herd sires and we have used 3 Bad Lands bulls oiurselves. One Bad Lands Ambush 45M is our current senior herd sire.
 
Sounds like a good one for sure-we've got a few expatriots from your hometown up in our country. You might have to come for a visit again some day. I'll have to darken your door again next time I'm down that way and check him out-these four kids kind of cut down by cattle looking tours lol.

I heard that the lot 28 bull at Shodoree's sale was a pretty good bull. Did you get a look at him?
 
I need to be careful here, don't want to step on anyone's toes. I'll just call them as I see them and hope nobody is offended.

Did you buy lot 28? He was the Storm son that Dan selected to keep an interest in so of course he's the one everyone went to see, myself included. He was their top seller too. He was without a doubt the deepest bodied red calf in the sale but for me that is where his superiority ended. He does not have the muscling that our bull has, most noticably in the rear quarter and his feet are not as good as I would like to see.

I had heard a lot of good things about the Storm sons in previous sales but I have to say I wasn't overly impressed with them this year. Many of them did not have good enough feet and they didn't possess the power I had heard about. A friend of mine who was at this year's sale and previous sales said that he didn't think the Storm sons were as good this year. He said that two years ago they were much more impressive. Lot 50 was one of the better Storm sons this year and I believe he was the third high seller.

Northern Rancher, good to hear from you again. I'd sure welcome a visit from you if you are ever down this way. As I recall you once made the Meadow Lake to Montana tour several times a year. We had a family reunion at Little Water Hen lake a few years back, great fishing and we had a good time. Like to make it back up there sometime.
 
There was that little border issue a few years back that kind of ended my wanderings lol. I'm headed to Plentywood tomorrow but just for overnite then back up to Estevan-Ty is riding saddlebroncs in Estevan and Weyburn this weekend. Do you still have that L56 semen-if it's cluttering up your tank I could move it for you. I just lost that old 93B cow from your place this spring-we flushed her to Freightliner last summer-hopefully a couple eggs took.
