New Bull

Check out the new bull we bought at the UT bull sale on Thursday. He is about 14 months old. He is by TC Candid and out of an Objective cow. Out of the 55 bulls in the sale he was #1 in CE and BW and #7 in YW. I thought his birth to yearling spread made him a great bull to bid on. We were lucky enough to buy him and we are very pleased. Tell me what you think. We named him "Pops"!

Use what ever scent that your girls prefer on him! He does not have a lot of hair for it being winter.......
Might need a blanket too. :D

A blanket is a great idea as well. I also think I will give him a pedicure and paint his hooves pink! That way if he gets out in the dark he will be easier to locate! Hahaha

His EPD accuracy was anywhere from 15-35%. This was the case on all the bulls in the sale due to them being so young and not having any progeny on the ground.

Just curious as to what kind of accuracy you would expect from a yearling bull.

Last time i looked NOBODY was selling 4 year old AI heifer bulls with high accuracies.

Some things are a bit of a crapshoot and they always will be.

He's an attractive bull. He seems to have good muscling. He has the EPDs you like. He has the right color for any market. That rear shot does a good job of showing a good sized scrotum. I think he'll work. Good pick, and good luck.

I believe it was 3900 or 4000 for the top selling bull. I got there late and by the time I walked through the pens seeing which ones passed the "eye exam" half of them had already sold. It's only after a bull passes the eye exam do I start looking into his numbers. If they pass the eye exam and I like their numbers then I decide on how much I'm willing to bid on them. It's a process and by no means perfect but you gotta start somewhere. We paid 3300 for this bull which I thought was a very fair price. In my mind he would have went for at least 4000 in a lot of private sales.

His scrotal size was really good compared to the rest of the bulls as well and I did factor that in when I bid on him. It's also note worthy that about 15 of the bulls didn't pass the first BSE and had to be tested again. Our bull was NOT one of those 15. The head vet of the sale said he is considering pushing back the birth dates for next years sale because they say it's getting so hard to make them pass a BSE.

I never once tried to pass his EPDs on as "real world results". I was simply comparing him to all the other bulls in the sale. I think most people on here are smart enough to know that EPDs are exactly what they say they are and that's EXPECTED! If it were 100% we would be calling them GPDs with the results being guaranteed!

I like your strategy. There are people on these message boards that will say EPDs are crap but we are firm believers that a good bull will pass both the eye test and have the EPDs to back it up. EPDs are only as good as the breeder that reports data makes them so if you buy from a reputable breeder EPDs are a valuable tool to use in the selection process. If a bull has a high BW EPD chances are there is a reason behind it.
