Neighbour called and asked if he could borrow my calf puller. I was at work, but told him to get out it my barn. I stopped by his place after work to find that he had pulled a calf from a heifer in his headgate/chute. The calf was dead and the cow was paralyzed. The chute is in his barn and his barn is too low to get a tractor in and it's to muddy for a truck..I won't go into the details of how much trouble it was to yank the poor cow out, but it was a #&$!ing mess that involved chainsaws and a come along..
Moral of the story: never pull a cow in the chute unless the chute is designed properly.
 
I put mine in backwards to pull. Maybe explained better as, the head is the catch, but the body is sticking out the front.
 
If I can get them to the head gate, I run them thru, put a halter on them, and then tie it to the gate
 
I just let them lay down and then pull the calf.. perks of calm cows.. We designed our head gate/chute to be dismantlable for just such reasons.. and I always lay down a big tie down strap or two under them before I get to work.. if they go down, at least I don't need to try to thread something under a 1500 lb lump of meat.
 
We have had the same issues pulling our chute. We like using our 1 lone headcatch left from the old dairy. It works pretty good.
Bigfoot - I never thought of putting them in backwards like that. Sounds like a good idea.

Sometimes it requires help, and some time not. I run them through the normal way, put a halter on them, and tie them behind them somewhere. Give them enough slack to get out, and then mooch them back through.

Exactly how we do it
 
I don't have a squeeze, just head catch. I have to do quit a bit of doctoring that way.
