I am new to the board and would like to start by saying hello to everyone.OK the question i have is this . I have 2 dexer's ( 1 bull and 1 heifer ) at the moment and i am getting 4 herefords (polled ) can i but the dexter bull and the hereford bull together in the same field and keep the heifers in another field ( all are about a year old). If not anyone got any ideas? Each field is about 5 acres

Have a darned good fence, or better - a lane between the fences twixt cows and bulls.

Two bulls? Only need one - take yer pick.

Hello downs, welcome. You won't know how these bulls are goin to get along till ya throw em together. Is one evil dispositioned? If so, maybe trouble. I know a man who has 7 big Black Angus in his bullpen and never has trouble.......good luck

Hello downs, welcome. You won't know how these bulls are goin to get along till ya throw em together. Is one evil dispositioned? If so, maybe trouble. I know a man who has 7 big Black Angus in his bullpen and never has trouble.......good luck

They will have to establish a "pecking order", and then will probably get along fine, especially if one is much younger than the other. The lane between fences is a good idea. I also agree that with this number of cows,why put up with two bulls? I routinely run 5 - 6 bulls in the same pasture (herd bull and yearlings for sale) and never have any problems (Murray Grey). ;-) :cboy:
 
Does your Dexter bull have horns? This might make a difference in your decision.

If he's with the heifer, she's probably been bred already.
 
Dexter bull has horn and it is possible that the heifer has been breed already but i dont want to run the risk if she isnt . It would kill her if she got pregnant by the hereford, and i was told not to breed the herford heifers till september . yes ther is a good fence between fields. I know this all sounds like a newbie but thats what i am lol . sorry if question is silly . thanks everyone

First, your question is not silly....it's good to ask!!! But you are still running a risk if the Dexter heifer was bred at too young an age by the Dexter bull....can you have a veterinarian check to see if the heifer is pregnant? The vet can tell you if the heifer is pregnant and, if so, about how far along she is, and advise you what to do. You might risk losing the heifer AND her calf if she was bred too young.
 
I saw a feed lot that had probably 150 bulls in it. They all seemed to be getting along just fine. Of course, there weren't any girls for them to look at either. Welcome! Haven't been here too long myself.

Little Lady you have to remember bulls wil be bulls and they are going to push and beller and dig holes. Some bull fights can be downright nasty. If your a newbie I would seperate the bulls, horned and polled accident looking for a spot to happen. They get to establishing pecking order and you get an eye gouged out or a hole in the gut. Sometimes when they are figureing out who the bad bull is the other one just won't give up.
And as one other poster ask why are you waiting on the Hereford.
 
I live in northern michigan and the winters are really bad, i have a shelter for them to go into if they want to. The hereford bull is 804lb and the heifers are just over 500lb so i was told to wait till september to get them bred, they have just turned one year old. Yes i will get the vet out to check my dexter. thank you all for the welcome and the advise im sure you will see me here a lot :D
 
Oh my, if they are a year old and only 500 lbs then there is something not right. They should be quite a bit bigger then that. If they are that small at a year old I don't see where they could possibly be on a good enough nutrition plane to be cycling. How did you come to aquire these heifers? Did you get any history on them?
 
We rountinely keep a pen of Texas Longhorn bulls together of various ages and have no trouble with them. We always have some yearlings and breeding age bulls that we keep together until they are sold.
 
I have horned and dehorned heifers in the same field and just by watching their interactions, it can be quite worry-some...I can only imagine Bulls together. I personally dont have any bulls, I prefer to rent them..we can do that in Australia anyways...I research the animal first then rent him for all my girls. I might keep a bull should one of the ladies throw one so I can handle him from birth to keep him calm, but dont like the ones I dont know...Im new at this as well...until I know what Im doing safely, dont think I can handle an unknown bull. This is dexters Im refering to not Brahman or other larger breeds. Their even scarier. But I love the heifers I have now, all halter trained and lovely natured...You will really enjoy it.
