Need new bull

O.k., I realize that I asking for a deluge, but my dad's longtime angus has permanently lost the use of his right eye, and my dad is asking me to use my 2 yeard old Brangus bull, and I can't really tell him no(he's having health problems) This leaves me with one angus plus bull that is only about 12 months old. My preferences would be another Angus Plus, Angus, Hereford or Simiangus. Will need to get him within a month or two, and would like him to be about 2 years old to breed 20 to 30 cows. I can't afford a seedstock under this short notice, but I want to get a good solid commercial bull. He will be used with my herd, which consists mostly of brangus and angus crosses, with a few odds and end thrown in.

Anyone have any suggestions?, or know of someone who could private treaty a bull for me? (Please no limi suggestions), and I'm in southern Louisiana.

What about a neighbor with a different calving season then you have and borrowing/renting/leasing his bull for your breeding season?

I thought about that, but he likes my Brangus (a.k.a. hatchett butt), and I was gonna replace him anyway. My dad's done so much for me, and he's going through a lot right now, I can't tell him no. The decision for me to "give" him my bull isn't about money at all. All of the things he's done for me, I think that's the least I could do. I'm trying to expand my herd at my place, so the most logical thing to do is for me to buy a bull.

Maybe doesn't make sense to some, but I feel it's what I have to do. I'm looking at Sometime in Feb. moving hatchett butt over to my dad's place, so I'm gonna need something by then.

I don't want to make this a chevy,ford, dodge post; I'm just asking if anyone in my area knows anyone who may have what I need. Already decided which breed it will be (either angus plus, angus, hereford, or simangus)

I guess I was a little ambiguous with my answer. I had meant to give your dad the bull of his choice and try to find one for yourself by borrowing/renting/leasing.
I guess I'm just a nosey parker but I know the majority of the producers in this area or at least what kinds of bulls they run.

Surely there are some Angus or Brangus bulls available in south La.? But if you find nothing of interest there and you feel like driving over to Crockett in east Texas you could look at some Angus at the Clark ranch. I know there is at least one poster here that has bad things to say about the Clark bulls, but perhaps that's an isolated case --- Clarks are a fairly big operation and have been in business a long time. As I recall, seems like there's a pretty good Brangus outfit near the La.-Tex. line but dang if I can think of their name --- starts with a "D" though. Doucet Double D (or maybe Diamond D) Brangus?? Also, on 1/28/06 in Sealy, Texas (about 40 or 50 miles west of Houston on IH-10) there will be a Texas Brangus Breeders Assoc. sale of 100 bulls and 300 females. Probably could pick up a decent bull for a reasonable price.

Thanks for the suggestions so far. I'm not used to having to find a bull in such a hurry. Will take some serious research on my part. All of this will be done without my dad knowing, because if he knew that I was giving him my best bull, and buying another, he wouldn't take it. But hey, you only have one father.

I'm not opposed to driving to east Texas or Mississippi: I have a fairly new Chevy with a gooseneck and a stock trailer. I just want to get a good bull, since he will be a major percentage of my future progeny. Thinking about hereford to cross to my brangus to throw baldies,and using my current yearling angus plus to breed the heifers that aren't black, but would just as easily take a good angus, angus plus, or simiangus.

Yes I was planning on replacing hatchett butt, but my dad just threw a wrench into things by asking for him now. I wouldn't ask him for the bull back, but he doesn't want hand outs. He wants to use hatchett to breed a group of heifers he has.

This gives me an "out" somewhat, in that I can go out and buy a bull that I like better, but I don't have the money that hatchett would have brought at the sale. I may have to cull a few of my heifers that will be too young to breed early spring, sell them, and then buy a bull.

I'd do anything for the guy, I'm just figuring out how I'm gonna do it.

I did find a "local" who has polled hereford bulls, but they are only 11 months old. I would buy two (they want $800), but I'm not sure they could handle all of my cows.

I've got a couple of weeks of some serious planning to do.

Can't be much of a Hereford Bull for 800 bucks, but usually get what you pay for.

I couldn't agree with you more, but these are yearling bulls. I'm not sure what a hereford yearling bull normally brings.

I paid the same for my angus plus at 7 months, but he's just not old enough to breed all of my cows this year. Maybe next year. When my dad first started out we had herefords, but that's been so long, I don't really have an idea what their value is. At least for a good one.
