Need help picking out Gelbvieh bull

Went and looked at some Gelbvieh bulls today, here are some pics, comments and replies are always welcome, hope you enjoy them. So, which one do you think would be the best herd bull?

I would go with the third one based on the bw #'s. the first two bw epd's are a little to high for me and the black one should be bigger for his age and #'s.

thanks for the reply, we like the red ones, the first one's half brother is the sire of the second and third. And yes the b.w. #'s are somewhat high, any of these bulls will work for us, just wanted to know some of ya'lls thoughts on them.

It looks like your herd needs help with muscle and depth. I would choose based off of which you feel would help you the most in those areas. I would say #1 or #2

yes, that is exactly what we are looking for in our next bull.

cow_girl i checked out your web site you got some good lookin cow's their.I like the first bull the best look's to have a small head shoulder's look smooth from what i can tell from the pic he is thick in the rear end he is 13 month's old proubly ready to work on a few head the other bull's are just 7 and 8 month's old.As far as B/W his acc birth weight is 74lbs think he would be fine on your cow's.Now IMHO he would do fine on your cow's .There are alot of folk's on this board with more knowledge on cattle than me but i like the first bull.What ever you deside to do good luck to you.

I believe that the 2nd and 3rd are around 700lbs, or more, and the older one may have been a little more than 700lbs when he was weaned. The 2nd and 3rd were just weaned monday.

I think that you have a problem here. The bull ear-tagged #441 and the bull ear-tagged #444 are obviously NOT the same bull - BUT, their pedigrees are exactly the same, including the Reg #, therefore it is difficult to differentiate their genetics!

However - from a Phenotype point there is NO question! Of the four bulls, the black should have been cut, so he is out. The #439 bull cannot compete with the #444 bull. He is narrower throughout and lacks depth of flank, bone development, masculinity compared with #444. He lacks hindquarters, and thickness, and is cow-hocked. I will grant that he is not showing his best because of standing on a hill - head down. But in spite of that, he is not the thick, masculine good-headed bull that #444 displays. Number 441 also lacks thickness, and depth of hindquarters and spring of rib, is pinched in the heart girth, as is #444 to a lesser degree, and has a finer bone than #444.

Because of the Reg #'s and pedigree descrepancies, the EPD's cannot be compared.

Establish in your memory the phenotype of the black bull, and avoid that type of animal in the future.

I would place this, as a class of yearling bulls, in this order: 2, 3, 1, 4.

I recommend the #444 bull. He will mature into a fine Herd bull .

Does bull number 2 have really funny hind legs? He looks, I don't know, too straight from stifle to hock, making the front of his hock blend in a strange way. I don't know if it is just the way the pictures are taken, but you can see it in all of the pictures. I don't know if it is called a gaskin in cows (it is in horses) (the muscle on the side of his leg, from stifle to hock), but it looks weak to me.

Am I WAY off base here?

-TCFC-You are very observant! When I wrote my opinion of these bulls I totally missed the lack of depth of quarter toward the gaskins (and yes, they are known as gaskins in bovines also). He does lack fullness in the area just above the hocks, and that should have been mentioned. However, all things taken into consideration, I would still select him as the No., 1 choice.. bearing in mind that trait in my selection of cows with which to breed him.

I checked out the website and your herd IS making some progress. I am not still not sold on that Tarentaise bull; but from the pictures the cows came through the winter very well. I am not sure what we are supposed to do with the baldie bull calf; but I can't fault anybody for making an effort to market over the internet.

#444 bull is a good looking bull. After looking at what DOC pointed out, he has his points and I will agree with him 100%.

I change my choice to bull #444.

I agree with Doc, 444 is the best bull and the only one I would consider a bull. The others lacks the quality that would make them a bull, masculinity!

If possible get a few more photos of 444, hard to determine his soundness on those photos without guessing.
