I have a yearling steer about 750lb and out in a large field i would like to know would it be better to set up a finishing pen seperate from the other cows or let him free range with the othe cattle. You'll have to set up a different pen of some sort to be able to feed the steer alone. Feed him at least twice daily all he will cleanup until he gets 1100-1300 lb's, according to his frame score. Small frame calves finish lighter and in less time.
Many feedyards shoot for 1/2" backfat at finish.
