NBC says over 2,000 cattle perished in the heat yesteday.

For Pete's sake, cut the protein ration in this heat people! You can't make money on dead animals.

I don't understand why the feed lot operators don't put up some shade. Those big free-standing roofs like you see over gas pumps, wouldn't they be sturdy enough?? Seems like the losses year after year when the weather gets extreme would make it pay for itself?? Not to mention the "animals are better than people" groups would have less to work with.

It is not the protien in the ration. It is a combination of the temperature outside and the increased body temperature due to digestion of the carbohydrates.

The fact that we have more black hided cattle of all breeds could also be a contributing factor. Remember back in elementary school, you were taught that black construction paper will absorb more heat than white or manila colored paper.

You don't see any folks running around outside in black clothes in 107 degree heat.

You may be right BC. My nurse cows are the only thing that get fed anything out of a bag. I noticed a couple of years ago that they did much better in the summer heat on 9% all grain ration. Anything hotter than that they would just quit eating.

Whatever the cause, I could not afford to take the hit a lot of these people are taking with dead cows.

This is a good reason for having some Brahman influence. Around here, the English and continental breeds spend the day laying in the shade or standing in a pond, whereas the Brahmans and Brahman crosses are out grazing during the hottest weather.

manila colored paper.
Words like this are a big problem for people with attention deficit disorder. They hear manilla and think vanilla ice cream. Daydreams take over.

My dad always said that was hardheadedness. Never could figure out why he thought a swift kick would make me think clearer.

Just a water sprinkler would help.

Digestion of all food sources creates heat. Feedlot owners are building a fire in an animal that is already burning up on the outside...pretty much like we do dairy cattle as well. "Hot" refers to calorie content of a feed....Boogie that "all grain' is probably "hotter" than 90% of the pelleted commercial feeds on the market because they have so much filler in them.

although i agree... wonder why they aint figured it out yet

Oh they know. But the $$ is in the gain. Since feedlot cattle are terminal anyway it's not that much of a concern and they probably have a certain % loss calculated in....but it's one of the major reasons dairy cattle last less than 3 lactations.
