Navel area problem on Brangus Cow

I purchased a 3 year old Red Brangus cow yesterday at the auction house. Once I got her home and took a really close look at her top to bottom, I noticed the skin that hangs down around the middle of the belly (navel area) she had a red hair less area about 2" long on the leading edge of this fold of skin. Since it is on the very leading edge of this fold, I can see it from both sides of the cow. Looked to be an infection or an abrasion of some sort.

This is probably why the previous owner sold her.
Any ideas what this can be.

Could it be iritated from flies? I know we don't have many flies at all left down here, but it hasn't been that long since we had hot weather and flys were abundant if not taken care of.

yeah, a lot of times they will get callousy looking navels. its probably not really anything to be concerned about.
 
Yeah, Still a few flys hanging around my place. I see that she licks at it occasionally. Maybe erratating her or itching. I'm just wondering what could cause such a thing. Would it be too low for a hernia since it is on the lower edge of the navel hide?

Other than that the cow has a good appetite and looks normal.

Attached is a picture of a different cow, but thought I'de show the exact location of the 2" erritation on mine.

Yeap that's the general area that flies eat on. If it's not swollen, and is just red and irritated. Should heal up fine over the colder winter months. She should be fine. But good fly management program should be used when the temps start warmin up and you start noticing flies.

ive had a couple with those dry crusty looking area's on are around their naval's one was pretty big like a growth but never give em any problem. are you sure she is red brangus? cause ive seen them more on beefmaster's
 
I have a Santa Gertrudis cow that has the same issue for about a year, I don't think it's affecting her in a bad way she still behaves normally. By the way is a purebred Brangus 5/8 Angus and 3/8 Brahman?
