Beautiful Cajun Country
And by the way, all you northerners, this is not meant to be offensive to you. So don't start a rant and rave about how this and that and you won the war and all that jazz. I'm very happy you have Lutefisk and ice and Polka.

My South

Spoken, written as only a true Southerner can!!! This was written by Robert St. John, executive chef and owner of the Purple Parrot Cafe, Crescent City Grill and Mahogany Bar of Hattiesburg , MS.

Thirty years ago I visited my first cousin in Virginia. While hanging out with his friend, the discussion turned to popular movies of the day.
When I offered my two-cents on the authenticity and social relevance of the movie Billy Jack, one of the boys asked , in all seriousness; 'Do you guys have
movie theaters down there?' To which I replied, 'Yep. We wear shoes too.'

Just three years ago, my wife and I were attending a food and wine seminar in Aspen, Colo. We were seated with two couples from Las Vegas. One of the Glitter Gulch gals was amused and downright rude when I described our restaurant as a fine-dining restaurant. 'Mississippi doesn't have fine-dining restaurants!' she insisted and nudged her companion.I foughtback the strong desire to mention that she lived in the land that invented the 99-cent breakfast buffet. I wanted badly to defend my state, my region, and my restaurant with a 15-minute soliloquy and public relations rant that would surely change her mind.

It was at that precise moment that I was hit with a blinding jolt of enlightenment, and in a moment of complete and absolute clarity it dawned on me -- my South is the best-kept secret in the country. Why would I try to win this woman over? She might move down here.

I am always amused by Hollywood's interpretation of the South. We are still, on occasion, depicted as a collective group of sweaty, stupid, backwards-minded, racist rednecks. The South of movies and TV, the Hollywood South, is not my South.

This is my South: My South is full of honest, hardworking people. My South is the birthplace of blues and jazz, and rock n' roll. It has banjo pickers and fiddle players, but it also has BB King, Muddy Waters, the Allman Brothers, Emmylou Harris and Elvis.

My South is hot. My South smells of newly mowed grass. My South was kick the can, creek swimming, cane-pole fishing and bird hunting. In my South, football is king, and the Southeastern Conference is the kingdom. My South is home to the most beautiful women on the planet.

In my South, soul food and country cooking are the same thing. My South is full of fig preserves, cornbread, butter beans, fried chicken, grits and catfish. I n my South we eat foie gras, caviar and truffles. In my South, our transistor radios introduced us to the Beatles and the Rolling Stones at the same time they were introduced to the rest of the country. In my South, grandmothers cook a big lunch every Sunday, so big that we call it dinner (supper comes later).

In my South, family matters, deeply. My South is boiled shrimp, blackberry cobbler, peach ice cream, banana pudding and oatmeal cream pies. In my South people put peanuts in bottles of Coca-Cola and hot sauce on almost everything. In my South the tea is iced and almost as sweet as the women.

My South has air-conditioning. My South is camellias, azaleas, wisteria and hydrangeas.
In my South, people still say 'Yes, ma'am,' 'No ma'am,' 'Please' and 'Thank you.' In my South, we all wear shoes....most of the time.

My South is the best-kept secret in the country. Please continue to keep the secret....it keeps the idiots away!

Good post. I don't know about you but I talk slow and some even say I have an accent. ;-) Doesn't it tickle you to death when someone confuses your slow speech with stupidity?

Few people are capable of expressing with equanimity opinions which differ from the prejudices of their social environment. Most People are even incapable of forming such opinions.

How did I know. I added the disclaimer at the top for a reason.

I was simply saying that those who say these things about the south are repeating the social prejudices of their environment. I am sorry you seem to have taken that personally. Neither Einstein nor I had you specifically in mind.

I take almost nothing personally. I was just posting this for "our" own pride. It seems like everytime something gets posted about the South it gets jumped all to heck about this and that. And yes we are proud of our social prejudices, just like you guys are proud of polka and eating lutefisk or whatever. No offense to you, it just seems like it always ends in a peeing contest when its just "social prejudice" or whatever.

Still you misunderstand. I am saying that the people in the north who think these things about the south are incapable of thinking outside the social prejudices ~ the things they have been taught. It takes independent thought and assessment to over come social prejudice that few people are capable of performing. See?? It is a statement made against those that think bad things about the south (or any region) based on what they have heard. They are too stupid to have any other but a herd mentality.

:lol2:  I once enlightened a girl from California in this very manner. I met her at a hotel bar. She was an ex-Budweiser model. I struck up an innocent conversation with her and she kinda began hitting on me. I was engaged and was not interested so I introduced her to a friend of mine and kept my distance. I think my lack of interest made her angry cause I'm sure she was used to men doing cart-wheels for her. Anyhow, I was looking to find the bottom of a bottle of Jim Beam and was just minding my own business and not paying her any attention (Thinking of her sweetnesty  ) when she again came and sat beside me. She began picking at me some. Asked if everyone from the south talked as slow as I did - of course I was really in first gear due to the copius amount of Jim Beam I had consumed. She asked some more questions and then she rattled something off in French. Now I was drunk as a skunk and I haven't spoken French in 30 years but it all came back to me like riding a bicycle. In fluent - however slurred - french, I quiped back the answer and then asked her another question in french as well. She was floored. Heck, I even amazed myself. She then apologized and said she had really misjudged me. I then explained to her I was getting married in two weeks.

Great Post Horti....
The only question that I have is "Do your cattle face south when they graze?" :D

Well, your first mistake was hangin out in Aspen/Hollywood. That's no more indicative of the general mindset of Colorado than Dollywood is a great representation of the South. Of course we used to be a lot better place to live before we got Californicated. So you're right let them think the worst, in the long run you are better off.

Seriously you make a lot of good points. You have a lot to be proud of.

Yeah, what an annoyance.

We talk slow and have accents? Dang, and all this time I thought it was the Yanks that talked fast and had accents.

You'd best hope you never wind up in Portland Oregon with a pregnant wife craving fried okra. They don't have okra, unless things have changed since '85. No one even knows what it is when you ask. They'll answer your question with the question, "Where you from?" "Fred Meyers" is a fancy safeway but don't even try to find good steak anywhere there - not even in a restaurant. They do have excellent lumber and cheap electricity. The best lumber yards I have ever seen with quality I have never seen elsewhere.

Yellow corn meal can't be found in Rock Springs or Evanston Wyoming either. They have white corn meal. Has anyone from the south ever eaten white corn bread? I have to admit Jackson Hole is one of my favorite places in the world. The Tetons are awesome.

Its good to be home.

Given all those and others, it is still hard to forgive modern day Nashville.
