Yes I know ... call the vet :D .
However I thought I would try this route first before another vet bill.
Shes an Angus X, solid mouthed, 8 month bred with her 2nd calf. I brought her in from winter pasture to a dry lot about 6 weeks ago. She's now fed free choice 'fair' quality alafalfa and 20% range blocks. Spring shots (7-way & bova-shield) were given 3 weeks ago. I didn't deworm because the vet thought I was too close to calving to use the pour-on.
Since I've brought her in, she's not holding her pasture weight (even loosing weight) and a bit runny on the rear end. Her ears are up but distant from the rest of my girls.
I put a magnet in her yesterday but I didn't give her any antibiotics when I had her in the chute. Why the weight loss?

Parasites could be a factor, but I doubt it is the whole story. Is frustrating to me that your vet advises not to worm this close to calving. Pour on is safe anytime. I was wondering if the protien was too high in the feed, could be causing her to be a bit "runny". That is just a guess and theory.....

Bummer ... wish Id've known that, as far as deworming.
He's a good vet, pro'ly just a precautionary plug, to his defense.
If it is hardware, how soon would you notice a difference in her feeling better, pending the magnet will pass to her reticulum?
 
I would guess the change in diet to a high protein feed is causing the diarhea, but, don't like the "losing weight". Anytime I hear diarhea & losing weight - first thing that comes to mind is Johnes Disease.
I have to question. You say she is bred and you gave her BoviShield. What form of BoviShield? BS Gold 5L5 or BS BRSV?? BS is a MLV and should NOT be given to a pregnant cow, UNLESS she received the same MLV WITHIN 12 months.

Do not recall the bovi shield we administered, however we cleared it with the vet prior to working cattle and it was the same we gave in the fall.
Checked on her this eve. She was right in the middle of the heard. Would a magnet improve intestinal problems that quick? :shock:
 
Alfala and 20% cubes...scours is probably from too much protein. If you have it give her some grass hay or straw and cut back on both the alfalfa and the cubes. A good probiotice won't hurt anything either.
 
We have found that limit feeding good alfalfa and giving free fed grass hay is the best way to keep them in condition. Last week I put the rest of a good alfalfa bale out, it ended up being to much for them and they dropped weight over night, looked terrible actually. I didn't feed them alfalfa for a day, they ate only grass hay for a day and jumped back into condition within a couple of days, then reintroduced the alfalfa.

It might be possible that she ate too much alfalfa and got the runs. Is it possible for you to put her aside for a day or two and just give her grass hay then reintroduce her to the feed. Sometimes cows burn out their stomachs and go off of feed, those cattle lose weight and get the runs, if you continue to feed them the same sometimes they seem to stay down for longer. But it has been 6 weeks on this feed, so this may not be the issue

Just an idea i guess. Might be worth a try.
