My farm fence challenge

I want goat field fence or 6 strands of electric high tensile on the red line.

It is almost 4 miles of fence.

Rough cut, how much might an excavator and operator cost to come clear the fence row?

Couldn't say . Depends on the terrain , the size of the timber, and local rates.
With 4 miles, I'd bet my hat you'll come out ahead buying a used dozer. Do it yourself, and sell the dozer when your done.

I don't know if a dozer is the best tool for it, a mid sized excavator might be more handy. Looks like a heck of a project

Nice looking spread you got hd. I may of missed it in another thread but are you planning on doing all the fencing yourself? Thats gonna be a job but once completed and cattle on it, it will be well worth it.

Addressing the questions...

There are some bigger trees, maybe 12". The fence lines are mostly along some deep dry creeks. The west side is not a creek, I share a property line there and the old, very overgrown fence is on the line. It is a mess.


The terrain is slightly rolling, but by no means steep.

Odds are I will buy a dozer or an excavator, learn to use it and set in on it. I am a little intimidated by the scope, but one bite at a time, right?

Deer stand, you bet, and turkey. Ducks are a few miles down the road in the Black River or St. Francis river bottoms and some very fine flooded timber hunting.

TT - I found that pyramid!! It is mine...

I know it is hard to say cost wise, and I'll get some estimates, I was hoping someone might be able to throw a credible per mile or per day cost. My brother and nephew are good equipment operators, my brother has a small dozer. He thinks it is five full days. He said he'd do it for $20K. My brother has a reverse family discount system. :cowboy:

Regarding fencing... I will be an active participate, working with some local fencers, and doing some by my lonesome.

Nice hd, its gonna be enjoyable seeing/hearing how you are progressing on here with your farm. I do agree for that kinda money buy some used equipment and do it your self then sell if you dont need.

Even with my impatient nature, it will be slow go. I hope to start in earnest this fall. Getting a little closer every day.

Very excited. It feels good to have a passion like this again.

You need to hire a dozer operator that has a least a d6 or better a d7 or even a d8. Could cost 185 to 225 an hour. Probable about a 40 hour week job.

Are those county roads I see. Our commissioner will clear the fence lines along the county right a way for free. Just have to let them do it when they have time.

FWIW I would pull a line and cut only the trees that are in the way. clearing enough on your side to be able to drive a utv or 4wheeler down in close proximity to spray it. there is the fact that you will have to repair some from time to time from limbs and occasional tree but it offers some relief for the wildlife and livestock.

That is what I am going to try first. Some places it will work fine. The more I can do that way, the better, I think.

raj- I am going to look into that. They do some trimming, maybe I can get them to go a little further.

hurley - That is my most expensive option, and that will be where I go when I explore less costly ones. It would be the cleanest and the fastest.

I am still considering buying an excavator, or maybe a dozer, and trying my hand at that.

I personally would tell you buy a track loader with a 4n1 bucket while you are clearing it may help you with other jobs too before you sell it.

HERTZ rents some high quality dozers. You might rent one for a week to see how the job goes. Just look up Hertz rental equipment and enter zip code for the location near you.

Sky lets load up and go help a man in need. Ive never ran any big equipment much but it looks like hes got alot i could learn on. Ill pass on the beer part, coke or pepsi suits my taste better.
