Any ideas, tips, suggestions. Im open to all. Love to learn so willing to listen.
They are getting milk 3 x a day on average each calf gets 8-9 litresa day (except for the tiny baby who is only 1 week old) she gets almost 4 litres
They have straw all day (drizzled with molasses) and calf meal all day.

Im confused by the prices you post. Did you pay by the pound for those? :???: If so how much did they weigh?

thanks nap,i think they will do fine.they are in good hands anyway!

Sorry Cattlehand, i should have explained it better. Those prices are what i paid for the whole calf!!!

So are you a calf "saver" person that takens in orphan calves??? There is a nice fellow around here that takes in orphan calves....but he pays a bit more for the calves....the 2 orphans we've sold him brought about $100

Yes in a way. I buy bull calves (steer calves) fatten them and resell,we make a bit doing that around here. A good steer calf around 250-350kgs can bring up to $450 at the sales(even privately)

Depending on how the heifers grow and mature, they will be bred and used as foster cows.
what ever heifers i do not want to breed with will be fattened and sent to market aswell!

Wow, you have your hands full, but they look good. Do you have a better quality roughage than straw with molassas? Or is that a common feed, after a dry winter?

Hey missy, where abouts in Oz are you? I am about 40 min south of Wagga, NSW.

Your calves look good, boy you must be busy.

What do you mean by the cows being so poor they are cutting their legs when they walk??

Straw is good for the young ones to develop the rumen, but the 3 month old should be getting better stuff by now.

Hi Keren, I live on the Mid North Coast NSW

Yes straw is good for the bubs. It is top grade stuff! They also get fed a calf meal(grain mix with milk powder) and Oaten Chaff mixed together. Ocasionaly get lucerne hay but i find they actually like the straw better so i give them what they will eat.

What protein is the calf meal? They are generally 18, 20, 22 % protein, and with that they dont need something like lucerne, hence they dont eat that much of it. I would continue with the straw for the young ones, but I would give the older calf a good quality cereal hay, either oaten or wheaten, or my third choice would be a good grassy hay. JMO though.

You got a great deal on most all of those calves. Sounds like you are taking care of them like you should. Keep up the good work.

Thankyou!!
They are starting to look much much better already. Some i have only had a week and a half.
We have another sale tomorrow so will see what i may bring home :D
