We’ve had so much rain lately. A quarter was too small for size comparison, so I used the only other thing I had in the truck that wasn’t trashy or a regulated beverage.

We have some huge ones as well and they're spouting up all over the place.

Just FYI, the ladies Anti Monkey Butt is in a pink container and works well on poison ivy.;)

I have ate lots of Cantrell mushrooms and some Shaggy Mane. I am pretty picky which one I pick. The wrong ones can be very bad.

I always thought I would like to try "chicken of the woods." Saute it in a skillet. But have not seen any in a while.

Ive been wondering if it was a good thing or not. Good to know. They sure are everywhere right now. Many different varieties.

There are giant puff ball mushrooms. I had no idea when I found them. My wife and I were out in the woods and I spotted something that looked like a human skull. Same size, white, and round. As we got close we discovered there were two of them. We were pretty relieved to find they were mushrooms.
Turns out they are edible if they are fresh, and these were. I understand some high end restaurants will pay decent money for them.

They are good eating but you use them when they are a lot smaller. Kick a big one and it looks like a black smoke bomb from the spore released.

There use to be people with little stands set up buying Cantrell mushrooms. In the 80's and 90's they were paying $5 a pound.

These giant puff balls were too fresh to have spores in them. Solid flesh inside, beautiful white and soft. I didn't know they were edible or I'd have taken them home and tried them.

I had a co-worker friend a long time ago that was really into gathering ginseng and mushrooms. Other than being outdoors in nature, I didn’t understand the draw, but I did find it fascinating how he could identify areas of habitat (if that is the appropriate term) and walk right to what he expected to find.
I know he had a market for the ginseng, but think the mushrooms were just a bonus for him. Most successful turkey hunter I’ve known. A bit hermitish, but still approachable and friendly.
Dang, haven’t thought of him for 30 years and a mushroom thread jogged a memory. Now I’m going to have to see if I can find out if he’s still alive.

Thousands of people died in Europe after WW2 eating mushrooms during the food shortage. My Botany lecturer at University reckoned it took an experienced fungal expert to be able to accurately identify edible mushrooms and even they could not be 100% certain in many cases. I have seen first hand what fungal toxins can do to the livers of animals, irrepairable damage. I am even reluctant to eat cultivated mushrooms.
