Hey you all, How do you know when a cow is carrying a mummy calf? Is their some blood test that can be done. I've got a cow that was preged twice in the third stage once in march then again in June? Thanks B&G :deadhorse:
 
Could be that your vet was wrong the first time. That happens more than you'd think. If you know your way around inside a cow glove up. A live third trimester calf will move when you touch it and when you sweep down you will feel the artery buzz like you grabbed a hotwire.
 
I may be wrong, but a third trimester mummified calf would be highly unlikely, all the ons I've come across was between the size of a mouse and a big rat. Not that you'll come across many...
 
Bought a heavy bred 7 at auction several years ago. After about 4 mounths went by I decided she must have lost the calf. I watched her for a couple more months . never seeing her pair up with the bull. So she went to the vet with a group to be checked. He went in , said bred 7 months, mummy. That quick.
I'll go with cow polliniater, the best way is to have someone who is thorough in the palpation

We had a cow that we purchased from the sale barn many years ago, we were told she was a bred cow. We waited for her to calved for many months, even after the calving season has been over and finally we had a vet out and he palpated her. He said a mummy calf and a very big one...about heeler dog sized one. He gave her a shot and she expelled the calf a week later. She got bred again and had calves over years.
 
I had the exact same experience as fenceman. Was going to type it all out, but you can read his post and consider it a ditto for me.

Mine was a lovely Red Brahman cow.
