Yesterday I had to have an MRI on my ankle. Two months ago I stepped in a badger hole and it's still not right. I have to say that was probably the worst hour I've spent doing anything in a long time. I'm not clausterphobic, but I was kind of freaking out a bit. And talk about uncomfortable, man. They put me in this position that got everything working and then told me not to move. After about 10 minutes I was mentally done, but the dang thing took over an hour.

Here's hoping there's nothing serious in there.

I just vomited and had to run outside after reading this.............and yes I am claustrophobic.

I just had my sixth MRI and probably have at least another two to go over the next year or so.

Hate going in the tunnel and it is far too loud.

The one thing I learned is be sure to take some foam ear plugs. The headsets they provide do nothing to help.

The claustrophobia thing can be beat - they now have open MRI machines - you just have to hunt for them. Just Google "open MRI"

No matter what you do - find a happy place when you are in the tunnel and then try to live in that moment.

The other thing is remember to keep your eyes closed - get them to put a towel over your eyes. We do it to animals for a reason and I have found it helps when I do it to myself.

At least that works for me.

Hope you get better soon

Best to all

Open is only open on the sides. The top still feels like the lid of a coffin

Anyone heard about an MRI that you can do standing up and it revolves around you, and is totally open. I heard there was something like that in Milwaukee. I would gladly walk there from Colo with two compound fractures of the fibula if this is true.

My son has to have his 3rd MRI in a couple of weeks. He's only 7 so they sedate him. Hopefully this one is as uneventful as the last and all is clear.

Arthur, my very good friend, I can sleep in there.

I had one a few years ago. I tried to sleep but couldn't. I can sleep through a lot of noise, but that was too much.

Had one about 8 years ago in Denver. Right rotator cuff. I didn't sleep but it never bothered me.

Some of the best sleep I've ever had. Listening to the banging sound just puts me to sleep.

Totally out. He wakes up not knowing a thing. Sleepy for a couple of minutes and then will be asking for White Castle. The anesthesia makes him hyper and hungry hungry.

Hope everything works out for you!

I had to have a couple MRI's on my head, I forgot about how loud that thing was. "Don't you fall asleep on me again" she said as I started to snore. It's no wonder bears sleep in caves, I thought it was cozy.

I had one on my knee and ankle a few months ago for my arthritis, as I am a bit claustrophobic they only pulled me in enough to see my knee, so as I was just laying down on the bed and I could see around I wasn't to bad. the CT scan on my head was the worst as I had to have my head inside not my body. any how hope all is well with you and you don't have to many.

And your nose will itch like crazy and you cannot scratch it.

When I had mine they were focusing on my neck. The nurse said "Now try not to swallow." I'll bet I'd have swallowed less if she hadn't told me that, but she did, so it was on my mind, and it seemed like I just had to swallow every few minutes.

Back around '06, I had an issue with my jaw and jaw surgery. I'm not sure if the thing was an MRI or X-ray, but each time they needed to do pictures, I stood and had to remove any earrings or necklaces, then this thing whirred and rattled as it circled my head. pretty nifty really. I liked that a whole lot better than the CAT scan machine going around my head.

The pictures it created were really great.

Thanks for all the kind replies. I tried sleeping. I tried staring at the ceiling, I could only see four lights and I wondered how many tiles there were but I never counted them, I tried focusing on the music and nothing. The guy kept telling me to hold still, which of course, did not work. Once, I felt a twinge of movement start at my hip, ride the wave down the leg and before I could stop it my foot twitched. All I could do was think "Well, there's a series we're going to redo."

Workinonit, I'm a rad tech for my real job. I think what you had was a panorex. It's an x-ray of the mandible that goes around your head. You have to hold a couple handles near your face and it only goes around about 2/3 of the way. It's pretty fast and like you said, the images are super cool.

You are only the second person that I have heard of that didn't go all the way in. The other person had back problems.

Anybody else not have to go all the way in the thing?
This could be very important to claustrophobic people.

I guess I'm only mildly claustrophobic, or maybe just in certain situations. I hate having to crawl under my house for any reason, won't change the oil in any of my vehicles because I don't like being under them, and don't much care to be in small rooms with the door closed. Because of that I was really dreading my MRI, but for some odd reason it didn't bother me.
