Problem is nowadays too many people think the world owes them a job, like it's some sort of constitutional right. Doesn't work that way in the real world, or at least it shouldn't.

You walk into businesses to drop a lot of nickels and you are greeted with a frowning "What ya need?" I want to say, "nothing" and walk out. Wife gets ticked at me some times. Then there are those calls you make to businesses. "Punch 1 for.....Punch 2 for.... and it goes on and on for 30 minutes. After ten minutes I am ready to punch a real person. What is even worse is if you hang up and have no choice but to call back eventually.
Yep. There's nothing like a Maw/Paw business that's tickled to see you. I drop my nickels in those places all I can.

I have had too many jobs in too short of a time period, too, but it was because I had (have?) a knack for hiring on with companies who go out of business, merge with another company and move to another city, downsize, or restructure and downsize before moving to another city. We got more frauds running around here collecting disability, that seem to have no health issues come Hunting season.

True story. I once managed several group homes. I had an employee that was good when she was there, but then she would bug out on me for a couple of days every so often. I was in my office when the phone rang and it was this woman saying that she was going to be late for work because she was at the dr's office getting some tests run. After she got off the phone, the person who had transferred the call to me asked what was up and when I told her, she said that when she answered the phone, she heard someone in the background tallking about darts.
Well, I knew that this woman threw darts at a local bar. So I called there and asked for her, and sure 'nuff, she was there. So naturally, I fired her the next day. You don't call in sick from a bar. Especially if you were planning on getting in to work afterward. This job involved caring for folks with disabilities, driving them, making sure they take their meds, stuff like that.
I had to justify firing her to the CEO of the agency. Turns out, they had been kinda dating. She also filed for unemployment, which I had to jump through hoops to get denied because she had beed fired for cause. But she didn't have much of a paper trail, you see, so it took a while.
Burned my bacon. I wrote up everyone about everything after that. Firing people was always hard. Although I did have three or four that I fired and I have to admit, it was fun and it made me feel better knowing their incompetent rears were outa there for good.

The only time I ever worked off the farm, I was a Manager of a state prison farm for 4 years. I had to fire a man. It was one the worst days of my life. That was 35 years ago and it still bothers me today. Telling someone that they no longer had a job did not give me a rush, it was a real downer for me. Guess I'm just a whimp.

I have had to fire people that I really didn't believe deserved it, but it was a decision made for me and I had no choice. Others actually buy into it. I could look at their write-ups, the training, the effort put into trying to make a good employee out of them and they just didn't get it. Like they took an active roll in their dismissal. They wanted it. And I could never fire someone without cause. Never. You had to screw up pretty bad. But these people managed.
My problem was that I was trying to hire folks to do a hard job that didn't pay well. Good benefits, but it was hard to sell someone on retirement and insurance when they had kids to feed.
The majority of people I fired, and I told this to everyone I interviewed, were fired because of poor attendance at work or chronic lateness.
If you can't even get to work, I can't train you. You cut your chances of being fired by a good 90% if you just show up.

Msscamp....the reasons for changing jobs came into play...you sort of get a feel for a non-team player and you know the companies in the area...a guy leaves a solid company there needs to be a real good reason.
When it came to firing I got some good advise long ago that proved true...once you make up your mind to terminate an employee, don't half-step take immediate action and don't look back, if you do you will waste your time trying to come up with excuses why to keep them.
I always believed that it was an insult to the rest of the employees to keep a $h1tbird and they didn't last long in my company.

My husband applied at the Wal-Mart distribution center when he got layed off due to down sizeing, went through 3 interviews and got a letter that he was too over-qualified for the position and the time spent on training him would not be justified because they felt he would not stay in the position. I thought it was funny that they said he was overqualified with past wharehouse experience but still needed days of training to run a forklift?
That is what I have been up against. You know, I went to college and got a degree, but it is a pretty useless one. And I haven't really ever used it in the jobs I've had. I don't want to work in the areas I have been working in and I don't want to supervise anymore, at least not now. So when I apply for a job, and get told I'm over qualified cause I went to college, I want to say, "I'm not overqualified. I've never done this kind of work before". I had my last two jobs for over eight years apiece. I have a steady work history and I don't like to quit once I find something. So I'm not job hopping.
I just want to make a little money to send my son while he's in school.
I should have gone to nursing school like my sister did. I could have retired by now. It's just disheartening.

Sorry, I know I took this out of context but I couldn't resist. I agree with your post and have known a few myself.
Well, I'll have to stick up for this guy to a degree. My husband is sort of in the same boat. He has a reading disability and is computer illiterate. He would fail tests in school if he had to take a written test but would ace them if he could do them orally. The school soon figured this out and let him take all oral tests. He is a smart man, just can't do paperwork. I have helped him fill out an application and he is upfront about his reading abilities at the interview. He purposely asks them not to try to put him in a position that requires paperwork. This and his work history has always done well for him. Fortunately, we don't have to worry about applications and interviews for him any more. We do alright with the livestock, our own dirt business, my off the farm job, and his pushing snow for the state in the winter for the last 12 years.

Oh, and I did get a job with a local high school. I'm also going to start working on my alternative teaching certificate. Hopefully, I'll get on as a teacher next year. They seemed hopeful. Not the big bucks, but it will help and I can be home with my other son holidays and summers.
