Are those the onions in the grooves? Wonder why they are planted in the grooves instead of the hills and why so much space in between?

the grooves might be for irrigation and if you move the dirt away from the base they get alot bigger.

I figured that was just weeds in the tractor lane and the onions were on the beds. Now you got me wondering. Sure looks like somebody did a lot of work laying the pipe down though.
Far as I know, the onions are planted in the grooves... California is so dry that they wouldn't get enough water to grow otherwise.
In Idaho we plant potatoes on the mounds, and we have pivots that water the fields, rather than the little sprinkler pipes.
People from Idaho can be a little different... *twitches* ...but the folks from California are pretty strange too, just in their own special way. :shock: :P

I just saw those Joshua trees for the first time on our road trip from WA to Vegas, wanted to see a cactus but I guess those things were good enough :D
Are these photos from around Lancaster CA. I have been there when the onions were harvested. They are pulled and put in sacks to keep the sun from turning them green. At that time there were rows of sacks of onions nearly as far as the eye could see. They were picking them up with a machine that was John Deere green. A conveyer on each side with a mexican picking the sacks up and putting on the conveyer which moved them higher on the machine, where another mexican was unsacking them and dumping in a hopper. The onions were then loaded on trucks and carried to a packing shed. The desert in that area is very interesting. You could see places where the land was runied by the salt in the irrgation water.
