mixing grain

I went to buy seed today for my winter pasture. My question that ran over in my head was instead of planting 5 acres here of wheat 5 acres here of oats and 5 acres here of rye. why not mix all the seed and plant together. that would ensure that you would have a stand of something and it would let you know which seed did better. if one pasture has better soil or soil moisture and it does better it might not outperform another field that isn't as well suited. if one seed outperforms all in all three locations that might be an indication as to what to plant the following year. What are the negatives to planting this way

THat is somewhat true. But, they may come to head at differnt times for harvest if you try to bale the stuff or combine it. If your grazing it you may still sell yourself short. That, is why I mentioned trying a few but, if you read back I said that there are still variables that may not give you a true test of what will occur on a given year.

We went from mixing winter annuals to separate pastures because of selective grazing. If you mean rye rather than ryegrass, they will select the oats and wheat and the rye will go to seed head and loose value.

I buy a "winter pasture mix" which has both wheat and rye in it.

If I were guessing I'd say it is maybe 75/25 wheat to rye. Works really well for me. The wheat works nice early and the rye goes a little later into the summer.
