Minor Breeds on Commerical Operations

Beside Angus, Herefords, Charolais, Simmentals, Brahman (and their crosses) and Gelbvieh.....what other minor breeds that fit well on commerical operations and why it is working for YOUR operation so well? Can't wait to see your responses!

I don't know that gelbvieh belongs as a 'major' breed or not. There's way more limousine than Hereford - at least around here.

Shorthorns - they have the docility of Hereford, the marbling of angus, and unrivaled maternal qualities. I can buy what I want - I've chosen shorthorns. They've yet to disappoint.

My herd which is totally commercial, I have that famous breeding..... out of saleyard by truck. I prescribe to the theory of buying bred cows for close to kill price. Get a calf out of them in the spring and then sell both the cow and the calf in the fall. There are some breeds I simply don't buy because of the amount discount on the calf. And there are some breeds that I will buy but discount on the price I will pay for a cow because their calves are discounted.

I don't buy longhorns, limos, scotties, pinz, or brahmnan.

I avoid or discount dairy crosses (especially Jersey), shorthorn, straight bred simmentals, or cows with over 1/4 ear. Also herefords unless I know they were bred black.

Generally these cows at a saleyard I don't know what breed the bull is so you are buying entirely based on the cow.

alot of folks can buy what they want, if they were as good as you say, their popularity wouldnt have waned

I have a few that are black saler influenced that do a reallygood job for me. You do NOT want to get caught in the open on foot around them but they're pretty quiet around horses and dogs and they raise a heck of a calf... I like them but not enough to add saler into my program. I can't keep any heifers out of them because the daughters fight to and my heifers all get brought down to valley at weining and worked on foot so anything goofy gets sold.

I forgot the Salers. We use them to teach the elk how to run and jump. I will be 61 next week and I don't run or jump as good as I use to. I avoid them too.

Belties do allright on my commerical operation. I used to have Holstein crosses cows but they were culled quickly due to udder problems when they get older but I still has one that has some holstein in her through she has a smaller udder which I am happy with it.

Awhile back somebody on here posted some Red Poll sired calves that were really nice. I have seen some really nice Red Poll cattle. I hear they make good mommas and are very moderate in frame size.

Jerseys, Holestiens, belted, angus, char. Taurus, what is your goal to achieve in your cows? Don't want any fights, but to have a cow that you can say raised a 700 calf one year, even tho' the next year it was 400. doesn't do anything for consisentcy in your cattle. The hardest part of developing a cow herd is finding the cows that will all raise a decent calf, with decent inputs, and will make a little money. I been at it forever, and ain't there. Keep heifers back, stay out of the sale barn, buy good purebred bulls, fill your pastures with mamma cows, and get a good truck to haul your money to the bank when it's all over. gs

I have 60 Black Angus cows, six heavy Angus influenced belted cows, a black baldy cow and two red angus cows right now and so far I got almost three crops of uniformed black calves. Its all selecting quality cows that will give you a decent market calves. Holsteins and Shorthorns don't work out with my operation for obvious reasons. Obviously minor breeds aint for everybody. But obviously most of us have some minor breeds in our commerical herds as you can see.

For your record, I would never promote them for commerical operations unless you know what to do with them.

Sending a shorthorn to a sale around here is like sending a ba$tard child to the family reunion.
