What are you trying to keep in? Bred cows? Pairs? Stockers?
If they’re quiet and have plenty of feed and water I’ve seen bred cows held in with 3 barb wires.
Not a lot of options for non electronic minimal fences

5 strand barb wire with a Tpost every 10' and a pipe post every 80'. Don't go cheap on the corners do a double H pipe brace and drive them deep.

Here it is nothing but 4 strand barb with T posts at 30 feet and a stay between posts. Lots of rock jacks on the corner made out on juniper cut in the area held together with wire.

Stocking rate matters too. A fence that's okay for country that needs 20-30 acres to support a cow probably won't be for country that needs 10% of that.

4 wire and bigger post spacing is about all your can do to save money. Even then, you have to be doing miles and miles to see any movement.

If you can learn to live with electric, I've got multiple neighbors that have 1 strand of electric barb wire with nothing more than t-posts and step in posts. No big corners, no high tension.

It's not for me but it works for some people.

We have several places that we run a barb about thigh high and a single hot wire knee high. The barb seems to keep the deer out of the electric fence.

Can you explain the value of the brace wire running from the top of the corner post to the bottom of the straining posts in the top right corner of the drawing? I have always believed that all they do is to help loosen your fence, since they are pulling in the same direction as the barbed wire.

It depends a lot on what is on the other side of the fence, bulls, greener grass.

It could be illegal here, but nobody would ever check or know.

No but these days you never know who comes through your place as in animal activists, poachers as in kids with pig dogs are not unusual going through up the back of my place where it is pretty remote.

Those are the equivalent of free spirited teenagers who don’t know where home is. You need a solid fence. Or at least a solid perimeter fence.

Cheap minimum fencing, no electric, containing as SBMF put it “the equivalent of free spirited teenagers”…doesn’t sound like a good recipe.

I would have a real solid pen for the first week with plenty of water and feed. After that being turning them out on plenty of green grass in a good size field. That is what happens here every fall.
