What do you guys use for supplements? The suppliers around here keep raising the prices. I prefer the tubs just because I cannot make it to the pasture or farm everyday. Prices have went up between 25 and 50 percent in the last 4 years. Any suppliers you would recommend.
 
No offense JD, but it would be difficult for anyone to answer without knowing what part of the country or world you are locate in.
 
Rahter then tubs a free choice loose mineral supplement would be cheaper, just not as convenient.
 
I am located in northeast Nebraska. I have tried the loose mineral, but it seems that they go through it in half the time they should. The suppliers here say to mix salt with it to slow the intake down, but it did not work. I also think that is not the proper solution. I am open to all suggestions.
 
They should eat 4 oz a day each. How many cows you have? I have 15 + bull. They eat a bag every twenty or so days. I have tried the mineral tubs and they use then quicker than loose in my experience and the tubs also have way less actual mineral in it. Even with less actual mineral and i pay 18 for loose and 75 for tubs it comes out to be the same price wise. I do use a protein tub with my loose minerals for assist.. Just my experiences with small herd.
 
I have 50 head that will go through a 200lb tub in 20 days, so it is a little under 4oz. The loose mineral was between 6-8oz a day with salt added. The prices of the tubs have climbed more compared to the loose mineral. I bought the last 2 tubs the feed mill had on hand and the guy told me the next price was going to be $12 a tub higher. How do you limit the intake on your loose mineral?

The only time we've had an issue with excessive consumption of loose mineral is for a coouple of days after we first put it out if they've been allowed to run out for a week or so.
 
I thought it would slow down over time, but it remained very consistent for 2 months before I switched back to tubs.

What brand of mineral were you feeding? Some that are poorly formulated they'll eat like candy OR they won't touch it.
 
I cannot remember off the top of my head. I tried 3 different brands from 3 different mills. My luck the same place probably packaged them all. Anybody ever use the mineral setup where every mineral is separate and the cow chooses which ones she needs?

Never heard of it. Just keep in mind that cattle only need extremely small amounts of certain of the minerals (those disclosed in parts per million) AND that is one that can be toxic. I'd much rather feed one that has been formulated and mixed so that they get the proper balance of the various minerals with each flick of the tongue.

We use Vigortone and have never had a problem with them eating it. I won a couple of bags of Purina a while back and the cows wouldn;t tough the stuff. Maybe because they were accustomed to the Vigortone
 
I've run into the problem of them not touching certain loose minerals not matter what--ended up giving it away to a friend that feeds it to a few milk cows a an annual feeder steer a coffee scoop on top of their feed. Not a very good way to do it but guess it works for him. I think it was a Lone Star product.

I'm using this right now in one of Dun's barrel feeders---they eat it, a very little at a time seemingly every day. I don't know enough about mineral to say it's a great product or not, but they don't totally ignore it and they don't scarf it down like feed either.
 
When I first got my mineral mix the cows wouldn't touch it, and once they figured out what it was, they ate it like candy. I put about 25-40% mineral in loose salt, depending on the time of year, and usually have a blue block out as well... I don't really care how much they WANT, I just give them a reasonable amount... My mineral costs about $35 per 50 lbs, and a large portion of the cost is for the phosphorus and copper in it (we're really low on that around here)... That way I get by with about $200 in mineral per year for my herd, and they get what they need through calving/breeding time.
