I'm trying to remember who provided the foundation heifer this year. I've seen pics of Dutch and Pistol Pete I think... Is Pistol Pete from OSU? Somebody's got more money than I do.

Star Lake offered 1/2 of the heifer and then bought it back with Larsons.

Pistol Pete is from Nelson Land & Cattle. Interestingly, Maui Jim only brought $22,000 for 1/2 after selling 1/4 for $45,000 last year. His full brother sold for $18,000 for 3/4 interest.

What about the Authentic Syndicate? The flush of the Sandhill cow? The NJW
offerings? and lastly the flushmates choice 19DxCRR Violet, how did these ladies look? interesting cross. thanks Larry @DFF

The Authentic Syndicate was a scratch as was the two lots from Curry Herefords. Another highlight was the Remitall Intensifier cow owned by Hanson Ranch. The audio was pretty bad, so I couldn't understand everything that was being said, but I sounded like either Mr. Hanson is in grave condition or has passed away and they only reason the cow/calf pair was being sold was to offset expenses. She brought $30,000.

I missed the Sandhill lot, my computer froze up.
The Violet lot brought $21000. They sure took a nice picture. Hard to tell on a skewed computer screen what they really looked like. I'll see Pete next week and visit at the Sioux Empire show. A Smith from Iowa and C&M from New Mexico bought35B. They just sold one.

Does it bug anyone else when they say they are going to sell choice and then end up selling both? Like Maui Jim and his brother? I don't really like it. When we had Angus the Angus Foundation Female Sale at NWSS used to do that, especially embryos and it would drag out the sale and there were less buyers by the end.

I agree. I noticed even more so in the Genetics on Ice sale after the Mile High. They did that with choice of three embryos by the same cow with different sires. Then they did it later when they sold 10 separate auctions for 10 straws of semen from the same sire. Most sold at $300 at straw but several sold over and a few below.

I heard Hoss Shaw say one time, "son, if you are sitting around a cattle auction and can't figure out who the sucker is.... It's you!" LOL

How much of that money do you think really changes hands?

Lot 1 should be real money because that was the donation for the Hereford Youth Fund.
The rest are syndicates and most have 10 or more owners so it really doesn't cost that much per bull.

I know that the $2500 that was bid on my behalf as a member of the Syndicate that bought the 1/4 interest in Maui Jim last year (18 members X $2500 = $45,000) was REAL money that left my bank account and ended up in Colyers'. For that investment, I'm entitled to 40 straws of semen plus the certs needed at cost. The only FUTURE perk I'm entitled to is a small discount on any more semen or certs that I would buy in addition to the 40.

George,

I'll be really anxious to hear how Maui Jim's calves come out for you. I liked him when I saw him in Ft. Worth last year. In fact, I think Colyers are probably my favorite stall (along with Barber) to check out when I go over every year. Man, they breed some thick cattle. I'll never forget seeing Hidalgo and Ben side by side when they were right about yearlings. Ben was easily the most heavily muscled hereford bull calf I've ever seen.

Really surprised Maui Jim didn't go higher.
