It seems every time we turn around folks are blaming cows for their methane and contributions to climate change. There is a constant barrage on the news and social media.
Have any of you ever heard that we should eat less rice? I never have. Never read an article or listened to a so called climate expert mention it. But according to what I have been reading rice farming might be producing 5 times more methane than cattle. Add to that rice farming is responsible for copious amounts of NO2. Also apparently a big problem according to the eggheads.
I'm not a conspiracy theorist but this has me wondering what the heck is going on.
I have a cow / methane related question and perhaps some of you scientific minded folks can help me out. Google so far hasn't been able to answer me.
We know that plants being digested and being broken down by microbes in a ruminant produce methane. We also know that natural plant decomposition produces methane. On say a per ton basis, what could one expect to see for a difference in methane produced from a ton of naturally decomposing plant matter compared to a ton of plant matter digested by a ruminant?
