When I was a kid and both my parents worked but had 2 cars and yet still commuted when ever they could, I was kept at one place or another. When I was young I stayed at Grandma Sloan's. There was the great place to play baseball across the street and lots of kids way older than me in the area. As the game was being played, I was allowed to play some. I was allowed to bat and run to 1st base ... called back to first base after a hit and bypassed by the hitter......I whined and took my bat and ball home after what seemed like an eternity to a child that old.

Robert, which was Grandma's son came over and told her I had took the bat and ball (as they were mine and the only ones around) and they couldn't play anymore.

She set me down in the kind an gentle way she had and in the end they went back to playing ball and had a good time. I was just a child and somehow I wasn't satisfied that day with giving up my convictions even though she made a whole lot of sense explaining it to me.

Robert was my hero. I was young and he went to Vietnam. I'm glad I let him play ball that day.

Even though I never knew Robert, I will remember him on Veterans Day. As I in my own way think all of those who have done, and given, for all of us. As a matter of fact its a lot more often than once a year I have these thoughts. I did not intend my response to go this direction but when I get on this subject It takes me, and I have to go along.

I own a Home Health Care Company in Texas. I have a Contract with the Federal Government and we serve Veterans through out North Texas. I being a Veteran "Peace Time" am in awe of what some of these Veterans have done in service of our country. You see this stuff on the History Channel, read it in books, but have you ever met face to face someone who was on Iwo Jima, Bataan, Okinawa, Tarawa, Normandy, Inchon, Kae sahn, The Ae Shaw Valley, just to mention a few. One specific example, and there are many...I actually got to know a man who served in the US Army during the North Africa compaign then landed at Normandy on D-Day and actually made it all the way to VE Day while serving in an Infantry unit in Europe. Battlefield commission along the way. He didnt like to talk about it in detail, but you got the picture!

When you speak with these Great Americans you learn what True Patriotism is all about...what really being an American means to them, and these guys LOVE AMERICA. I am so often humbled by their example. Next time you have the opportunity to Thank one of them, do it. They have done so much. God Bless America, and Thank you Robert.

Wewild....did Robert come home? and glad you had a good day in the end.

Robert came home. He was in his upper teens. I was 6. He went through a life changing expierence.

I watch the scoreboard each night and prayed for him. I prayed he would come back safe.

Killing when neccesary and death around you don't sit well with a teenage mind.

I'm glad he came home...too many young men didn't make it back

And killing when necessary and death around you doesn't sit well in just about anyone's mind...not just teenagers

that's one reason we need peace for our boys now. I look at some of those faces and think they only look like School boys, some as old as my Son some a bit younger and I think why what a waste, how does a young mind cope with this and their families back home. I would be a quivering wreck if my Robert wanted to go, must admit I have talked him out of it, I've lost two sons don't think I could bare to loose all three.

So it's alright for others to fight to defend your way of life but you don;t want any part of it. Interesting concept. Kind of like therefinery issue, "not in my backyard"

no that is not what I am saying, I don't want anyone to fight, no Mother should have to go through that tormment every day on whether her child is going to return. I know it is happening but no I don't want my Son to go, selfish I know but that's how it is.
