With antibiotics becoming prescription only, it has become a bit impractical to call the vet and arrange to meet up to get drugs. What drugs should I have on hand to treat cattle? Before I always used la 200 or penicillin but now that everything is script I am open to trying new things.

I keep a bottle of Draxxin and Banamine pour on around all the time. They store well if you keep them out of the heat, sun or freezing temps. A bottle of LA200 though I seldom use it. Sulfa boluses, kaolin pectin and spectinomycin and C&D antitoxin for calves that overindulge on milk after bad weather.

EU and Japan - this class of drug only used with extreme restrictions, veterinarian supervision, less than 5 days treatment, longer withdrawal.
the drug is really good, but with a long thought, should be a second choice to pull from medicine box, by conscientious practitioners and herdsman.
because the resistance of gram negative bacteria of this family of drugs is transferable to gram negative bacteria in the environment even without direct exposure to the drug, and for this reason this resistance is detrimental to humans with diseases like salmonellosis and clostridium difficile and other life treating diseases, mostly gram negatives, infecting the human gi tract.
so the rule of thumb for me? choose broadly, and choose baytril lastly.
 
Not a simple yes or no answer to "is baytril still legal in food animals". In cattle, it is legal only for treatment/control of BRD caused by a few specific bacteria. Kenny posted the label above. Not legal for anything else. Not legal for lactating dairy cattle. Not legal for any off label use - only legal for use as specified on the label. It is not a broad spectrum antibiotic.
 
I had never used Baytril until recently. Used Draxxin on one. It didn’t work so took him to the vet and he gave him Baytril and he was better in 12 hours
 
How long do y'all keep meds after the expiration date. Our rep told me it's good for at least a year after but the way he said it led me to believe it was good for longer, especially if unopened.

I always text my vet on expired meds. They have never been more than a few months past date and he said use it.
