For those of you on Medicare........Do you really need a supplement policy ?? Or is it the health insurance companies just trying to sell you something. Thanks

I'm not on medicare but my parents were. It has been a few years but you should relize that medicare pays 80% and you or your supplement policy pays the other 20% medicare doesn't pay........ 10 - 15 years ago, Mom had a $50,000 hospital stay and Dad had several $20,000 stays. Would suspect those stays today would be total near $250,000 today so without the supplement policies you would be on the hook for $50,000.

I don't know what the premiums would be for a supplement policy today, but 10 years ago the $3000 - $4000 price tag was well worth it for them. Can boil down to your circumstances. Can you afford to self-insure yourself.

Something for you young folks to check on ,if you want your estate preserved is( long term care,) for if you or spouse have to go in rest home your whole saving will be used and propery will be sold before medicare takes over, been their with in laws and friends I know.

Health care is a rip-off, to many people making a living pushing paper around. Went to the hospital last week, doctors bill was 38.00 dollars a minute, just a bunch B.S. Hospital bill hasn't come yet. Don't worry obama will take care of you.

I'd say to get a supplement. It really helps with the medications and doctor visits and other stuff not covered. You have to shop around, but I think you can find some reasonable plans. Have you tried AARP?

I never thought about that... Dad has secure horizons. He's on medicaid now, but he still has his medicare and supplement. He just got it from his local insurance guy. They shopped around for him for the rates.

Medicare/Medicade saved my life. about 2 years ago I had stage 4 colon cancer. Today I go to see the Dr and he says "Go home, come back in 3 months" He says it will come back, mabe tomorrow, mabe 20 years.. Kinda in lombo here, but I've decided to enjoy every day given to me.. Oh,that's all I have,Medicade/care.

A good supplemental policy is pricey but worth it, Mom's policy picked up 100% after 2500 dollars a year out of pocket. Only 2500 dollars on a 300,000 dollar bill. Have to remember we are no longer young and growing were old and going. Most of our medical bills will be in our last few years.

Rock, let me put it this way. My little episode with the aluminum ladder which caused me three broken ribs in five places back in May has cost me about $7000 out of pocket - so far. I don't have a supplement policy. I do have co-insurance which ain't worth the paper it's written on. I'm now looking for a supplement policy to help take up the slack.

yes you should get a supplemental policy, there are many to choose from, i think now is the time for people to pick and choose and make changes up until 12-16

It depends on your needs. I have Medicare without a supplemental policy and have never had a problem paying the extremely reduced prices charged through medicare. If you've tried/abused yourself all your life, working toward becoming dependent on doctors, then get a policy. I've had surgeries. It's always been cheaper to pay my share than to pay for another policy. As for drug coverage, it's mandated for medicare. It's even cheap considering the price of drugs.

As for your estate? If you haven't protected yourself with a trust, you will be giving it all to the government so they can spend it for you.
