May Heifer

Here is a May 2nd heifer. She is sired by RCR Scorpion's Stinger, and is the second calf out of SD Redemption's Angel (I could write a book about this cow, her show winnings, and the quality throughout her family, but i think you can figure it out by looking at the heifer).

This heifer was bred and raised by Sand Dollar Ranch, the ranch that my dad and I manage. We needed a bull to breed to our females that are closely related to our two main herd sires, NP Redeemer's Redemption and RCR Scorpion's Stinger, SO we made a trade and got a bull calf that is totally unrelated to our herd. But does come from extremely high quality. The bull calf was named Grand Champion bull in the Youth and Open shows this past weekend at Tulsa (beating a 3/4 brother that has won some big and extremely competitive shows). So we are happy with the trade, and we will get the first calf out of this heifer.

Anywho, like i said, she is a may heifer, and combines out Top breeding. Pictures were taken mid-august.

This is a truly nice animal.

In north west Alberta we often had angus or herf that we crossed with LH cattle - they lived on nothing and always raised a nice calf.

People really do no appreciate the value of LH genetics in a commercial herd.

My daughter won all 4H in northern Alberta one year with a LH, Herf, Angus cross. A great calf and entirely representative of the commercial herd we ran at that time.

This is an animal that would do well on the circuit - but if I could put a dozen or more of more of her in a commercial herd and cross them with herf or angus I would be a happy camper.

They are not afraid of 40 and 50 below - are easy to keep and will be excellent mothers - AND those calves will make you money.

You keep doing what you are doing, because you are on the top of your game. Congrats!

Thanks for all the comments on her. The guy that traded us the bull for her is coming to get her tomorrow, and he is very excited.
I'm good friends with him, so he calls or text messages me just about every day for an update on her.

...i was thinking she needs to go to the show string.

She will be in the show ring here in a couple weeks at the State Fair in Dallas. The new owner has big plans of showing her.

Interesting side note, the sire of the bull we traded this heifer for came out of Canada. He was bought at just under a year old and did very well on the show circuit here in the U.S., even won World Grand Champion, and has produced extremely well.

This is a magnificent example of a LH heifer for today's Longhorn Genetics! What a testamonial to the protocol of "Breeding The Best to The Best!" She embodies the Genotype and Phenotype of the breed, not only in her Longhorn physical structure, but in the excellent color pattern she displays! What a knockout female!

She reminds me of a Longhorn bull that was popular about 1993 or 1994 who was owned by a breeder near Colorado Springs, CO. Their primary advertising feature was a picture of this beautiful bull, who was marked very much like this heifer, and had the little daughter of the breeder riding him, with a saddle and bridle, down a Colorado Red Rock canyon!! :roll: I wonder if you remember this Ranch, and if perhaps your heifer is a progeny of that line of Longhorn breeding. I don't remember the name of the Ranch, but I think their address was "Calhan, Colorado". Does that ring any bells with you?

This is the bull Zhivago. He was bred and raised by Darol Dickinson who is based out of Ohio, but I think they had an operation in Colorado. I am not 100% sure, but I think at sometime some percentage Zhivago was owned by the Searle Ranch, which is headquarted in Calhan, CO.

YES!! Absolutely that is the bull! I was attending a Longhorn show at Fort Worth in the mid-90's, and a lady who was working with the Searle Ranch tried her best to convince me to invest some $$$ in their Genetics and/or Ranch while we were watching the Longhorn Show. I didn't do it, but it was not because she didn't try hard enough!

I know very little about longhorns,but I remember when dickenson moved to barnsville ohio to run cattle on the strip mine ground,He seemed good at makeing money off of all kinds of wierd things.I always wondered if his cattle were any good or he was just good at selling them?

Both.

He has raised, and branded, some of the best foundation genetics in the breed. Bulls for the most part. He had/has the land to keep a lot of bulls around for a good while longer than most, and that has helped his program immensely. He has been very progressive in blended genetics in the longhorn industry. He has some really good animals, but he is very good at marketing and selling his animals.

When you get OLD enough that all of the girls look young enough to be your Great Granddaughter, you tend to refer to them as "little girls!" (At least SOME of them look like "little girls"! You just have to be careful when addressing them, and not say stuff like, "Well! Hi, little girl!" That tends to get you in REAL trouble!
