Mashona replacement heifers?

I'm not looking for any Replacement Mashona Heifers now, but I was just wondering if anyone was breeding Replacment heifers or planning on breeding Replacment heifers anytime soon. Thanks

Replacement heifers implies you have some to begin with... The list of people who have Mashona females is very short.

RV is one person on this board who may be able to help you out as he has a small group of PB and FB Mashona females.

Separately, I know a few people who have or will have ______ x. Mashona F1's.

I gotcha Walnut, I apologize. I own a Mashona Bull so I will have some f1's so I was just looking to see if anyone had any females that might be available in the future.

Have you tried Jaime Braun in Florida? he manages the largest Mashona herd in the USA, there are a few smaller breeders who you might be able to locate through Weaver Ranch as they imported all the original stock.

That's where we got our Bull. I'll have to ask him, I imagine he would be the most able to sell some

Due to the increasing interest in Mashona stock, it might be a more realistic option to look into buying embryos to start a new pedigree herd.

Of note, we are doing a little test and have confirmed a successful AI of our nicest fullblood Aubrac heifer to a fullblood Mashona. If it goes well, we may do more of this down the road.

Do you have any pictures of your bull? I would also be interested in his pedigree. My group is beginning to grow. I have not done any ET or IVF work, but do have several females that would qualify next year. I should start selling a few females beginning next fall. If you have an interest, send me a PM.

Thanks for the pictures! I still haven't succeeded in posting any. You should like the quality of the calves out of those crosses, but maybe not the coloration. My red bull covers up the spots really, but not the black bull - no different than the other black bulls that I have used. The heterosis has been more than expected with both bulls. The F1 crossbreds outgrow the full bloods.

Well that sounds pretty good Ron. I am excited to see how the calves look and perform. Honestly though I like cattle with color and horns but I also know that they usually don't sell well.

How do your Mashona do in the winter up in Missouri Ron?

They have tolerated the winters well. I was worried the first year and kept them in a pen where they could go into a barn, but the last 2 years I haven't done anything special and treated them like the rest of the cows. Our last 2 winters have been fairly mild. We have only had a few days of subzero temperatures/wind chills in the past couple of years. I also give all my cows a couple of pounds of grain in addition to hay when it gets below 20 degrees Fahrenheit.

Rawhide, what are your winters like compared to Fayetteville? I lived in Raeford for 5 1/2 years, and the winters were less severe than Mashonaland winters, My Tuli cattle thrived in the climate.
