We have one cow in 2nd trimester and one cow in third trimester that appear to have lump jaw. I haven't been able to feel the lumps to see if they are soft or hard. I want to do it all in one chute load. If it's soft, I am prepared to lance, drain and treat. BUT - being pregnant - will treating it topically with iodine affect the calf in any way? If I do it in 2-3 treatments? I know you can't do the iodine IV or it will abort the baby. Any thoughts? Any other successful ways to treat lump jaw?
 
Sodium Iodide is the most effective treatment & can cause abortion, it doesn't always. That said, I would prefer to be safe & go with LA300 or some other Oxytetracycline. Topical iodine will not hurt the calf but if you're flushing an abscess you should dilute it with water.
 
So LA300 has treatment qualities for lump jaw? That's good to know. I will definitely do that. Thank you!
 
Often used in conjunction with sodium iodide but our vet has used it instead of the iodide in a heavy-bred (same for woody tongue). If it is just an abscess you generally don't need to treat with LA, flushing with diluted iodine is generally sufficient. If it is hard I would consult your vet prior to treatment.

"Sodium iodide has been shown to be safe for use in pregnant cows and presents little risk of causing abortion. Concurrent administration of antimicrobials, including penicillin, florfenicol, or oxytetracycline, is recommended. Surgery to debride large mandibular lesions has also been described in conjunction with iodine and antimicrobial therapy."
