Love those old silos!

I snapped this picture yesterday. I thought it was pretty cool! I have always thought those old silos were cool! This one has a tree growing out of the top of it. Enjoy. B&G

I am glad you like looking at them. However, I don't remember anything about filling them or feeding out of them that was "cool". All I remember was lots of hard work. But I guess it is the same with a lot of other relics of the past. Cool to look at but we have come up with so much better ways to do things.

Neat. I'm always impressed with the craftsmanship of the brick silos and smoke stacks. Took some kind of talent to build them for sure.

My father in law is 92 he told me this story. When silo was first built every morning you had to climb up to the top and pitch the silage down to the feed bunk. One year a auger was purchased that ran on a track that slipped down as the silage got lower you controlled it by a knob on the ground the auger spun in a circle and augered the silage down to the feed bunk. He said that was quite a day as you didn't have to climb the silo every day just when the auger bound up. Kinda like when I asked him the first year they got a tractor if he missed the mules/ horses. Said he didn't even think about it as he was glad he didn't have to walk behind them farting all the time.
