Lost Digits

My husband and I spent most of Sunday afternoon in the ER at Huguley Hospital. He was cutting boards with a table saw, something he does almost every weekend, and cut off one of his finger tips and the pad off another. He's fine. He's done this before when he worked at Uniroyal.

My question is this: How many of you all have missing digits, be it from farming, ranching or home improvement? Almost everyone in my family will loose at least one finger if they live long enough and work hard enough. The men anyway. I think that all the women have managed to keep their's. I have had two fingers crushed at different times loading trucks.

What's missing or should be missing? Let's hear your stories.

My Daddy lost the tip of the first finger of his right hand down just at the bottom of his fingernail. He was working on a V belt, got mad 'cause he couldn't get it going as quick as he tought he should, started yanking on the belt, no doubt cussin' a blue streak and bang!

He said he looked for the missing end of his finger for a minute, noticed that he was bleeding pretty good, so he went on to the doctor. The doctor had him send my brother out to look for the tip of the finger, but of course my brother couldn't find it, so the doctor fixed him up and sent him home. Daddy found the tip of his finger about 2 weeks later...bleeeech!

When the bandages came off, a little piece of fingernail had started to grow out of the end of his finger...looked like a claw as it continued to grow but stopped growing when it was about 1/8 of an inch long. My grandfather used to say it came from Daddy shaking his finger at us when we were getting a lecture from him.

I'm just fine. Still have all 12 Toes and 16 fingers.

There's that Tennessee thing again. I can't way anything, though. My husband cuts off his own fingers.

That's really gonna put us behind on the remodel, too. I'm trying to sell the place and we thought we would make have a tad more curb appeal.

I still have them all, but some arent as straight as they used to be.

Well, after I crashed and burned on my nephew's electric scooter at 11:30pm New Year's Eve 2 years ago, I have one that will never be quite right... :( Thank goodness my ribs healed up ok...

Your story reminded me of this news article on regrowing fingers:

Good story. I think they should sell that powdered pig's bladder in feed stores.

Still have everything attached, but I work with a guy who lost a couple of fingers to a table saw a few years ago. Also dated a girl many years ago whose Dad lost an arm just above the elbow in a corn picker.

I can still count to 20. I now own my second table saw and about my 5th skilsaw and I have never had an accident. knock on wood!

I can count to 16 and a half now...don't have either pinky finger...lost my left pinky when I was real young from a brown recluse bite...went to the doctor and he took it off before the venom could spread through my hand...but...the venom still spread through my hand and I had a missing pinky finger to go with it...other pinky finger and half my ring finger came off from the saw...and a toe on my left foot amputated from an infection when I was younger too

Nothing really major that affects anything...never even notice the toe missing while im walking around...didn't use the pinky fingers much either, but it did take a little getting used to...and the half of the ring finger is still as useful as it was before...i'm just glad I didn't lose my thumbs...now that would have been a problem

I still have all my fingers, toes, etc. Most have been either smashed (especially thumbs) and lost a few finger nails along the way (good thing they grow back)
many broken bones, and almost lost my arm in a tractor accident (but thank God for good doctors and titanium screws)
My wife got close to death due to brown recluse bite, but we are still kickin!!

Yes, I think they should. Any snakebites, Ryder????

I think that losing a nail is about the worst. Takes forever for the old one to come off and for the new one to grow on. I have experienced that twice. New worlds of pain. One was so bad I fainted.

It takes 3 months, 3 weeks, and 3 days to fully regrow. Same length of time for a sow to have a litter of pigs once she's bred. Some of the old timers would cut a nick in the white of the fingernail. Once the nick grew out to the end, it was pig time.

I still have all my attached. I watched a guy step off the side of a yarder one time, he caught his wedding ring on something. Popped his ring finger off slick. He turned sort of pale real quick.

I know a guy that did the same thing coming down off the roof of a house. He grabbed on to something and swung down, leaving ring and finger behind.

Those rings can be dangerous.
