Lost a pretty little calf last night. I tried to get the heifer into the barn but she had her mind made up she was going elsewhere. It was only our 3rd calf to be born and hated loosing it. The calf looked to have been licked clean. I'm not sure if the cold get her it was down to 17 or if the cow lay on it and killed it. We still have about 6 inches of snow on the ground. Sure hope the others don't have any problems. I can't afford to loose anymore.
 
I don't like to lose them and hate to see anyone else have bad luck. While not ideal, I wouldn't think your weather was too bad. I did one time have a cow lay next to her calf, throw her rear leg over it and smothered the calf. Wishing you good luck with the rest.

Loosing them stinks, and hopefully you won't lose anymore. We made it through alright, we have one calf that's a little slow. If he isn't better by morning I'll give him a shot of Nuflor.

sucks to loose them at least you didn't lose the cow that really sucks. I know I got a few heifers and I got my fingers crossed. I hope they do it on their own no problem
 
Went to feed this p.m. and had one missing. Wasn't hard to track her in 20" of snow. Found her in a snow bank with an early bull calf. Thought about trying to sled him to the barn. Figured I would create too much trauma for the both of them. Walked to the feeders, gathered up some hay, went back and made him a nest. She layed down beside him as I left. Will see what tomorrow brings.

Yeah , It's not fun losing baby calves. I lost a heifer calf that was born yesterday morning. When I hayed and left for work seemed fine when I returned at 3pm found her dead and all cleaned off ???? Have no idea what happened but, it was a first calf momma. I always say "There's how we might want it to be, and there's how it is". :bang: B&G
 
I also lost one last week out of a heifer. The calf was very small and seemed premature. It scoured bad and could barely get up and around. I moved it up where the herd was at for protection. A few days later the calf got stepped on. Bad weather was coming in so I put it in my calf shelter. I got the scours cleaned up and got optimistic that the little fellow was going to make it. He got over being stepped on and would stagger out of the shelter to feed when his mother showed up to check on him. Thursday morning it was cold and very windy and he was in the shelter with about 5 other calves. They looked content so I didn't bother them. Went to check on him Friday and he was gone. The moma acts like she doesn't know where he is at and walks around the shelter expecting him to be there. No blood, bones or anything that would show trouble. I have no idea what happen to him. The shelter is in a fenced area so even if he walked out I don't think he would have left the area. Complete mystery to me. He was over two weeks old and weighed 40+ lbs by then so I don't think a dog would drag him off but I am not ruling out anything.

We just had something similar ... we trucked our newly born heifer to the house to get her warm and a little commercial colostrum ... bedded her in the garage ... then back out to mama in the AM where the heifer stayed until dinner on her 2nd day ... then, back to the garage for overnight and another meal ... the, the back out to mama in the AM and she's been out there ever since.

In many ways, there are no right answers...good luck to you.

And, to the OP ... sorry for your loss.
 
Sorry to hear you lost the calf.
I lost a nice bull calf two weeks ago. It was born one evening, gone the next morning. It is always going to sting.
Then you have a momma cow trying to get the calf up. Always tough to experience.
 
Thanks guys ! We are just getting our feet wet with cattle. Had another one this morning. Little bull calf. It's up and trying to nurse on all the cows so I'm guessing he will make it just fine.
