We recently had a new calf (calf's mother has plenty of milk and is a great mama).
But a couple of times I saw the calf nursing on a heifer, she seemed to enjoy it too!
The heifer in question was never exposed to a bull, pregnancy check was negative (BioPryn), however - she is growing udder and also lactating!
How it's even possible?

Thank you! Does it mean the calf stimulated heifer's lactation by nursing?
Or is it completely unrelated to the calf?

I have saw a very short bred cow come into milk because of being nursed.
Had a mixed group of some junk cows at the house, this cow would stand and let anything suck her. She cane into milk just like if she was raising a calf.

The only way to separate is to place mama and calf on a different pasture, but that will expose the baby to predators (unfortunately we have a lot of loose dogs, plus coyotes)...
