Longhorns with what bull?

I am leaning toward LH's for some land I own. I have a small herd of black cows now on one parcel of land I own but this is some different acreage.

I do understand LH's get docked (or basically don't sell for as high as angus/cross, Chars, etc. at the sale) but I am ok with that.

I have several reason for wanting LH's but the main one is this land and the forage on it is more suited for them (based on the opinions of several folks whose judgement I trust).

Any ideas on what might be a good bull for these LH's? I have heard Char from some folks.

Any pics of some LH X's?

And last question. Any one know where in the southeast (FL, GA, AL) to look for some LH's for sale?

Char bulls work well i've heard.

We've used Limousin's for years and sell a good set of chunky red polled calves every year out of longhorn mommas.

On our limo/LH cross cows, we've used a Brangus bull to produce good black/red calves... in our semi-arid conditions in south texas it works very well.

char, limos, brangus are good for longhorn/crosses

i've also heard that Simmental are good bulls to use on LH for mostly black polled calves..

Thanks, that is just the info I was looking for. Would love to come to Texas to see your operation. How many head do you have? I am supposed to go out there and duck hunt this winter anyway. You near Dallas?

The easiest way to get in touch with longhorn breeders in your area would be to call the Texas Longhorn Breeders Association of America at 817-625-6241 Their website could also be helpful http://www.tlbaa.org

I havent owned any crosses, but a few of my good friends have used char bulls and have had a lot of success. I've also seen angus and other black bulls put on them with success. Look into what sells better in your area before choosing a breed, then choose the right bull within that breed.

Thanks. Great website link. Found several breeders in my area. One guy I recognized as the major partner in a law firm that I use. Maybe he will give me some good LH's deals since I have spent over 150K with his law firm in the past year on Real Estate contracts and closings. :lol:
