Longhorns in county shows (TX)

Does anyone show Longhorns in their local county shows? I know quite a few people show in the TLBA shows and such, but what about showing thru 4-H?

My daughter will be eligible for 4-H next year, and since the ranch we are managing raises Longhorns, I was thinking that this might be a good project for her. I haven't been around the show circuit very much, so I am not real familiar with the in and outs. Any recommendations are welcome, such as:

- should she show a steer or heifer
- what age
- colors that do well (or does it matter?)

I would call Don at the extension agent office in Waco. I don't think the county show has Longhorn classes, I'm afraid you'd get grouped in with "all other breeds".
 
The county north of where I live is going to have a longhorn class this year. This is the first for them and closed to anybody outside Tennessee. Hopefully they will get enough participation to open it up to all next year.

Sorry, Bobcat, I didn't read all the title. I see now it says Texas counties.
 
I would check with your county show. Most county shows, everything has to be dehorned for safety and legal reasons.
Unless they have a specific Longhorn breed set up.

As far as a steer, if for the market steer show, it would probably get grouped in AOB, which, if so, it would just be a waste of time, unless, it is a slicked sheared show, then it might be ok.

The answer I got from the county extension agent is

"Yes, she would be able to show either steer or heifer at the county show. They would be in a class with other breeds at the show.

In our county (Collin) we don't have a Longhorn show. Never seen one shown at our county show, either. Reason being that when you get put with Other Registered Breeds (ORBs) you'll probably be showing against Chis and other breeds like that and it will be somewhat tough competition. I think that your safest bet, if you're looking to show a Longhorn in Junior shows, is to go with a heifer and not a steer. A Longhorn steer in an AOB class will be grouped with all the clubby calves and it'll be extremely tough competition there IMO.
 
Here in Tennessee, we will be showing at several Beef Expos this year in All Other Breeds portion of the show maybe one day we can have our own division. OUr 4-H agent is helping us with this. In our County Fair here we are also working our way to our own show. Keep your fingers crossed. IT IS TIME FOR US TO ADVANCE! :D

A few years ago the North Texas affiliate of the TLBAA organized and donated approximately 20 heifers to youth in Wise County, to be shown at the Wise County Youth Fair. It was great, they even donated some in year 2, as well. The kids had to write essays and fill out applications for the heifers, then had to update the donator at least once a month until the youth fair. There were 28 Texas Longhorn heifers at the first show, and they still maintain some 15-20 heifers at the show, each year. From that initial donation year there have been a handful of families who are now breeders and show many times a year. It really turned out great, and there enough Longhorns at the show now that they have there own breed class, before showing against the other breeds for overall champion. The Longhorns are now accepted by other kids and parents at the shows and nobody gets "freaked out" or "weirds out" because of the horns anymore. THat first year you could tell there were a lot of nervous people that had never been around longhorns before.
