They look good. You've got some good blood lines going there. That Wiregrass Phenomenon is some good horned blood. Nice looking calves too. These are what a good Longhorn cow should look like. You can see that they're doing a good job raising their calves.

Thanks, Rustler. The Super Bowl cow doesn't have a huge amount of horn, but she sure carries the genetics and I love her color. We're going to watch her calf and see what happens.

FYI, they have a WHOLE lot more to eat than what my pictures show (a couple of these were Joe's photographs the day after we were at his farm). A little bit of rain is a good thing. Everybody was waiting at the gate for the green bucket to show up. ;-)

Thanks, lilmac and showmom - I am totally infatuated with these animals.

It's interesting to hear about the white influence - I honestly picked these cows because of their coloring. So many of them were mostly red and I thought it was boring. :shock:

I know she's almost all white, but just look at this face! I'll just have to find her a boyfriend with lots and lots of color. ;-)

Is there any way to tell from the pictures or the pedigree how the various cows are bred (which of the 7 families they come from), knowing that they come from Joe Grady? I think you were right on the money with the couple I posted a while back.

Its a lot easier to look at the pedigrees to find out the families than it is just looking at them. A buddy of mine says that Joe has a pretty good mix of genetics, with an emphasis on horn production.

I'm not an expert but I can give a pretty good guess by looking at some of them how they are bred. Butler cattle usually have a look about them. Of course cattle that are white with red or black ears, nose and feet are either Butler or Butler influenced. Also, lacey faces indicate Butler breeding.

I can usually guess a cow with Peeler or Phillips breeding, they are usually larger framed, beefier type animals, maybe horns not as long as a Butler type animal but with selection for horn in the last few years many of them have pretty good length.

I study pedigrees alot so I can look at a registration certificate and most of the time tell which of the families they contain. But not always.

Nice cattle. Joe does raise some good uns. Just because they start out all white doesn't mean they'll stay that way. I'd be willing to bet that calf gets more roan to her as she ages.
