I've never seen a sliding cut gate. Wouldn't a push/pull rod on the cut gate that can be operated from outside be simpler?

I've had them come back out and I just try and regroup and run them back in again. If they don't have a bad experience with going in and out they will load back up. 16' is to short to work them in the trailer.
 
Back gate of the traile is a full swing or half slider. We load through the half slider. Cut door is full width swing gate. I guess the biggest issue is getting them to run up the alley as a group. Talking to a few people it seems we need I make a smaller pen within the pen we sort out of. That way once we sort out the calves to load, we can push them to the smaller pen, close them off and push them all from there. Currently were doing it all from a 48 x 72 pen with the alley in a corner
 
I not comprehending the problem correctly that's for sure. So your having problems just getting 5 calves in the trailer at one time? Once 5 or 6 go down the chute put a post behind them. Then get behind them with a hot shot and put them in the trailer. How hard can that be. :D
 
Took me years to take the time to do it, but a chute just for sorting is pretty nice. Just a narrow alley just wide enough for one, and to narrow to turn around. Just like going to your squeez. One gate angles at the end. Send the ones you don't want one way, and the ones you want to keep another. Back the trailer up to it, and send em down again. They've already made the trip once, so they go again.
 
Been there and fought that to many times to count. 2 things helped a lot one was to break the pin down into a couple smaller pens and the second was to have a cut gate in the trailer with a slider in it. You can load a couple calves then close the cut gate and load some more and open the slider to combine them and load some more. You could fab up a slider out if some square tubing and flat steel with your existing cut gate in the trailer to make it work. google donahue trailers to see a picture of the slider they have.
 
Highgrit, the bigger problem is getting all tht need to be on the front, to run up to the alley as a group. If I can get them all to the alley at once it's not a problem. And it's compounded by the fact that it's all portables. Can't wait to have a spread where I can build a permanent working system.
 
No advice.
Your calves are too confident and relaxed about life.
Had this same problem loading mine last April, patience and determination gets it done in the end.
Restricting the pen size where you're loading will help, with portable gates or however you do it.
 
when you get the three in the trailer have a helper close the back gate. get the others in the alley and when you get them lined up and at the gate open it and the others should go in.
 
Need a pen within your pen to sort to and then take those to the trailer. I always open the gate and don't use the slider so I can use it to push them on in if they balk. Another person always helps too.
 
Usually my son or my wife will run the back slider gate of the trailer, once I get the calves down the chute and into the front of the trailer. They slam the middle gate shut, and then open the back gate again. I then run the other 2 or 3 down the chute and load them in the back. If I am by myself, its a little more difficult, because I have to crawl over the corral fence to get to the back of the trailer to shut the gate. Did that one time during a light rain, and slipped and banged the side of my ribs into my trailer corner, bustin a few ribs. I now try to always have someone help me when I load.
I now even will pay a neighbor kid to help me sort & load if none of my family is available. Usually the wife is there.. but she knows its all fair in love & war and loading cattle in taking abuse. :lol:
