This year for the first time, we are going to pay some young backs to pick up hay in the field, load it on our trailer, unload it and stack it in the barn. We want to pay them a fair price. What would be a fair price? I think there will be 3 or 4 of them.
 
A number of years ago we got two-bits a bale, field to stack in barn...that was in the mid 60s. Accounting for inflation and advancing maturity we pay to have it delivered and pay a son-in-law to buck it into the barn...cheeper than diesel fuel to go out and get it.
 
We pay 7-8.00 an Hour. Usually for the same boys. I always give them a little extra, if they hustle and do a good job stacking, and don't stop the clock on them for water breaks, or dinner.

just what are water breaks an dinner.when i hauled hay there was no breaks.only when you was going tween field an barn.then eat at 1am if your lucky. then eat next morning fore you get back at it. scott

If your're good to your help the are generally good to you.Plus I don't want to have any of my hands pass out and have to carry them to the barn, or call the Coroner. :lol:
 
when i hauled hay it was me an a buddy.we haiuled hay to the barn.an also hauled for the ppl that bought hay out of the field.the hay owner payed 35 cents to his barn.ppl he sold hay to payed 50 cents a bale to their barn. the guy furished the trailer.most days we would haul 500 to 700 a day. long an short hauls. scott
 
around here the going rate varies from 50 cents to 60 cents per bale if the field isnt over a couple miles from the barn

Same here.
 
When I need help I usually start them at $12/hr and work them up from there. If they keep coming back and are good workers I just keep increasing their pay. Usually end up with 2 or 3 good one's then I just try and hang onto them. I usually have to compete with wheat harvest, they pay $100+/day for drivers.
