Livestock Hauler Poll

Interested in seeing what people across the country use for hauling livestock.Growing up, pickups and racks were common for hogs and sheep or a few head of cattle. The rest were hauled on 1.5 to 2 ton trucks.A trailer was rare.
Now,most in this area use a trailer of some sort with only the big operators having large trucks with 20 to 24 foot aluminum cattle bodies.It's rare to see a pickup with stock racks.I still have a set of steel racks but haven't used them in years.
Personally,i use an 18' aluminum Sundowner to haul "local".Usually I have enough calves to need a custom hauler with a 24' truck when it's time to sell.
Even put a group on the road between pastures or working pens from time to time.Short distance,careful of time of day and enough help. Sill legal here.

I can haul 8-10 head, even 12 yearlings in the old bumper pull. last year or so, guys in the branding crew have been hauling for me, they all have longer goosenecks. we sell year round.

I have a 20 foot Wilson gooseneck. Neighbor has a semi with a 48 or 52 foot trailer which I can use. But lots of cattle here get driven down the road for miles. All the freeway off and on ramps have cattle guards. In the fall as water and grass start drying up it is normal to see cows come marching down the road on their own. In the morning people go out and sort whatever has come in and put them into their owners field.

Hauled with cattle racks on a pickup as a kid, as well as a 2 ton. I don’t miss those days.

Twenty foot Gooseneck I have is 40 years old this year. Farthest it’s been from home is Madisonville....roughly 50 miles. Heaviest load was probably Giddings, 30 miles. A bit overloaded that time.

Used a half ton pickup and a bumper pull trailer for years. Upgraded to a 3/4 ton pickup and gooseneck a year or so ago. We still just have a 16' trailer, but usually are not needing to haul more than that will accommodate. On the occasions that we have a larger load, I hire a friend that custom hauls.

Have used several. Pickup with racks, hauling cattle and several times a horse. Pickup with pull behind trailer is how I learned to drive with a trailer and how to back up. Used a 2 horse trailer at first, then a 4 horse trailer. Had a 2 ton 1953 GMC truck I used to back up to the chute, feed the pigs on it for a few days before the feeder pig sale... then go out, call them on and get 10-40 feeder pigs loaded in about 5 minutes. Now we mostly use a 1 ton pickup with a gooseneck, have a 20 ft and a 24 ft trailer.

I had a bumper pull flatdeck trailer with a stock rack, still have the stock rack for the chevy, but I just got a 20ft wilson aluminum GN last year, it's definitely an upgrade

On the poll is a 1 ton considered a large truck?

I threw it in,depending on if it's a pickup type or like the long wheelbase with 12' cattle body we used to run.
A cousin one said those were probably some of the most abused trucks there were since people saw the dual wheels and thought they had a heavy truck.

3/4 ton Ford super duty 16 foot gooseneck most of the time.
When we are getting a load between neighborhoods a 24’ gooseneck.

We use a bumper pull if we need to take a cow to the vet or something, a gooseneck trailer if we have to take some odds and sods to sale or maybe bulls to pasture and the like. At sale time we hire 6 axle liners.
