Little early for Thanksgiving

Little early but I'll give thanks all the same. Went to the barn and found these welcome visitors.

They call them lilacs and maybe another name I am not sure. The reds are called Bourbon Reds

Those are blue slates. Lilacs breed true every time but those black flecks on the tom and the hens wing are from the splash gene. They can be white with black flecks(splash) blue(diluted black like char over angus) or black.

think if I could find something like that they would be hung and then frozen for a later date. but we don't have the luxury of wild turkey here.

Yes that's the other name. They are pricey turkeys I know that.

Yes I did but I haven't a clue where they came from. They just showed up at the gate this afternoon and I threw some scratch feed to them and they came on into the barnyard. My dog didn't know what to think of them. He wanted to teach them a lesson at first but I told him to leave them alone so he's just watching and waiting for me to give him the word and he'll tear into them but for now he's content to patiently watch them.

I had seen some turkeys in the woods behind the barn over the last few months. I thought it odd that they didn't act like wild turkeys and wouldn't run off but all I could see was a glimpse of them. I think these must be the same.

Its strange how stuff just shows up. Last year it was a heifer. Never did find who that one belonged to and I tried to advertise it but no one claimed her. Sheriff's office eventually told me it would be ok for me to call it my own. Good thing because she had a nice calf by her side when they called and not from one of my bulls either.

So Jo you are one of those neighbors that stuff just shows up at your place huh? Every neighborhood has one I think. But usually when they talk to the Sheriff it is not as friendly as your talks seem to be. :lol:

That's me. I don't mind the animals but I do wish they would keep the soil diapers and the occasional sex toy.

Jo talked about running from a tracking dog a couple of weeks ago. I think that the real picture is beginning to come into focus. ;-)

Definately Bourbon Reds, Standard Bronze and Blue Slates. Looks like all females. Get a tom of each breed and you will have tons of turkeys to smoke for life and can sell the eggs and chicks!

Three of them are toms. If they hang around I might be in the turkey business. Should make a fortune selling free-range gluten-free organic heritage breed turkeys. :mrgreen:

Since they are all standards they should breed naturally. Nothing more fun then a bunch of young turkey chicks running around.
So are the toms one of each breed or what?

Not sure. I can't hardly tell the breeds apart but there are six turkeys and a guinea and I think they are mixed about even. They stayed around all day today. Tossed them some more scratch. I wish I could lure them down toward the pond where there is a feeder and get them to roost in the trees. Last night they roosted on the gate by the highway and I don't think this is the safest place for them during the weekend with the road warriors about.

Leave a trail of scratch for them down to the feeder and they will follow it. I love my guineas. Noisy little buggers but funny as all get out.

The reddish white ones are the Bourbon Reds. The ones that look like a wild turkey are the Standard Bronze. So that leaves the last ones the Blue Slates.

Got told a story. Neighbor came to visit hubby's grandparents and saw this large bird in the willow tree behind their house. It was dusk and he thought it was an owl after her chickens. So He shot it! Turns out it was one of her turkeys! :lol2: :lol2: :lol2: :lol2:
