Hi
I have been in search of the right kind of cows for me for about the past three months. I was looking threw the classified ads today when I found a guy that had 8 bred cows for 850 each and he had 2 pairs that were bred back for a thousands each. The cattle are lomousine x commercial. I was wondering if any one had any input on these cattle.
THanks

Did the ad give the ages? $1,000 for a bred cow is pretty good these days, depending on age, soundness, udder, etc. "commercial" can mean any breed, just not registered. Call and ask about the ages and what the "commercial" part consists of, Angus, Brahman, dairy, or all of the above. Also try to find out what kind of bull they're bred to, does he guarantee them bred...

Suspect they may be going cheap for a reason. Can he keep them behind a fence? Are they aggressive? Are they problem animals?

and so on .....

Beware of good deals - they seldom are.

Traders will buy ss or bm cows at the sale barn and resell in the paper . They might not be a good buy ..

850 sounds a bit sketchy for oklahoma. maybe in georgia... but i would think good stuff would bring more out there. why dont you go see the cows? inquire about the age, breeds composition, get a look at calves on ground, find out what bull they are bred to, check out his calves if they have any on the ground, see how the cows are being/ have been managed, see how they react to people (this ones kind of important- lol).

Hint: if you need binoculars go back home.

if you are worried about their age and temperment... ask him to run them thru the chute and look at their mouths... that will do 2 things... let you see firsthand what kind of mouth they have and how they act..

good luck

and i will add this... if you or someone with you can palpate em... you will know when to expect calves...

jt,
Excellent approach...a cow's temperment generally will not come out until they are under a little stress...while you are finding out a whole bunch of other info about them.

sounds like short & solid or broken mouth. if they look good you could freshen them & sell all in the fall. make sure they havn't been grain fed to make them look good

The price is about right for our area...the limousins have come a long way in the disposition department...we have a couple of heifers that we'll breed to our Angus bull next month...looking to bring some quick muscle into our operation. Prices for everything has skyrocketed within the past two months....and black, any breed brings 20-30 $/cwt more than any other color in the sale barn. Limos still have some pretty hefty birth weights..100 pounders are not uncommon..85 common. We like our 50-65 pound baldies....didn't pull one this season.
