This photo was taken late August of last year. He was about 18 months old. Fed mainly on a diet of ringmaster showbeef and good timothy hay. I know this is a scary thing to ask around here but...
Hows he look and what can i do better next time?
Thanks, all opinions are appreciated!

Put more condition on him. Not being rude but he is poor. You can see all of his ribs and he looks like he is light muscled over his top and in his hip. That could be because he is, or it could be because he needed to be in better shape.

You can make a big improvement by selling this thing and getting an Angus, either Red or Black or a Hereford, either Polled or Horned.

I would switch from ringmaster and try to get some Acco. He needs more cover, so you need to add some barley for your next calf. Also, try to sart out with a better quality calf.

Thankyou for the ideas. He was in very poor condition at the time, and i believe it was from lack of feed. I was undergraining him and he needed more to finish out so quickly at the right level. For my first calf, i did the best i knew how. Thankyou very much for the input you guys.

quick question cowboy13... what exactly does barley do for the calf, i aint never fed it before

Maybe some walking everynight for exersize Cowboy 13 how much do you exersize your steers to build muscle

Where are you located? Here we usually have to use barl;ey til it gets cold because it will burn out the calves. Both work real good at putting fat on a steer.

Ellensburg, WA. Most over here use corn to get the fat on them and corn is MUCH cheaper than barley. I will look into your suggestion. Thanks!

I am not a steer jock that is why I am asking but isn't it beneficial to walk and exersize your steers to build muscle?

Acco is not the best feed in the world. I feed it, but there are many other good feeds out there. You need to choose the best feed for your animal. If you're looking for a Limosin again next year, try to find one that's got a stronger rear and more flank. You'll definitely want more condition on him; try to find a finishing ration that's got a high percent of fat in it...I wouldn't accept less than 5%...finishing my steer out, I never fed less than that. Walking your steer will help build muscle if you can't keep him tied up. Yes, you can ramp...but what I found to work was tying and walking everyday. You might could find a steer with a little more bone. Overall, the steer you had isn't horrible. He's a decent Limi steer with a few flaws--which they all have. I think the biggest improvement you can make for next year is to get a better feed. You can add corn or barley to your feed, both will put decent finish on your steer. I'd do whichever my steer liked better. If your steer is hard finishing, you might try both. But be careful of burnout. Whatever you do, make the adjustments such as adding corn or barely slowly or you're liable to send that steer off feed. Also, study your calf. If you know his flaws, a little bit of good showmanship can help you to hide them and give you the little push you need to place one slot higher.
