Anybody ever see these little glowing bugs anymore? I used to see thousands when I was a kid but havent hardly seen many in several years.
 
Had to kill them off. All that light was causing global warming.

We used to want to clean up all of the dead decaying trees and such until we found out that lightening bugs lay their eggs in them. They need the decay moisture and heat.

I was thinking about them one evening... then not 2 weeks later i started seeing them.
 
This reminds me of the time when our daughter was 3 and forgot her blanket in the van outside. It was dark and she ran out to get it before bed, a while later my wife and I were going to tuck her into bed and couldn't find her. We then realized she never came in from getting her blanket so I went out to look for her. There she was in the van with the doors locked screaming her little head off. After she calmed down she told me about all the "glowing eyes" out in the field and that she was too scared to come back in the house alone.

I felt sorry for not keeping better track of her and for how scared she was, but it was still funny. Her younger brother and sisters always remind her of that story everytime they seem some fireflies.
 
Me too, but not anymore. I say fire ants killed -- they seem to be responsible for everything else that ain't around not more. Wonder why FA can't take care of mosquitos!
 
I haven't seen any this year and we have been really really wet, so I don't know it is drought. I don't get out much at night, though. Mosquitoes are bad. I need some Martin houses.
 
Saw my first ones, and only ones, in Iowa a few years back. I asked if that was a fire fly, they said "they are called lighting bugs!" The closes thing to fire flies out here is strapping a flashlight on the cat :o .

Got lots and loads of both at my house. Fun when one gets in the house-they smell/taste bad,so the cats leave them alone,but sure watch that light. :lol:
 
I saw a few around in late spring. I was anxious for my grandbaby to come visit so we could catch fireflies in a jar but now there are too many mosquitoes to be outside after dark. Guess we'll just have to watch for them from the screened porch.

Just a note about fireants....I recently heard an ag extension guy on the radio say that fireants were the best way to control fleas.

After hearing that I realized that the past two dry years I haven't seen as many fireants and now this year I had a huge flea problem (now under control) which I've never had before.

ChrisB...loved the story about your daughter. That one will stick to her for years to come.
 
They are alive and well here. Last night at the fireworks, before they started they put on quite a show by themselves, very cool!!
