Any one else planning on attending this sale? I asked for a catalog but haven't gotten it yet. Any one know how many lots they plan on having?

Not planning on going, but I'm kind of surprised Ira hasn't sent his normal video lots...he's normally on top of that sort of thing. Also surprised I haven't seen a catalog.

the videos are on their website. some good, some bad, some I would call ugly to be honest. Ira told me at the Ozark Empire that the catalogs were being made the first of the month.

If you do happen to go, take a look at lot 31 (I think) out of Sherrill's Casey and let me know what you think. We bred the sire and sold him as a calf at side of his dam.

Actually, I think I am wanting to see lots 23, 26, 30, 31, and 32. 33s pic looks nice but I am not a hatchet fan.

I think I want to get a Briggs 023/91 influenced female. Any thoughts on them?

I also think I want a Challenger female. Lot 30 has Challenger and Grizzlys Chunk in her.

Did you like the cow that you sold that is the Grand dam of lot 31? Easy flesher?

We haven't owned any 023/91 offspring, but he's very popular right now, and we've talked about buying semen, but haven't done it yet. My assumption would be that you would get some good muscling and easy fleshing out of him in addition to having the polled genetics. We bought the granddam in 2001 on the advice of Buddy Smith, got one excellent heifer, which we retained, and then sold the dam with the bull calf at side (full sibling to the heifer we retained). The retained heifer is probably the best cow we have right now.

We are now using a son of the retained heifer by Top Gun 244 as our herd sire, and having had him GeneStar Tested, he is 8 Stars on Feed Efficiency.

So long answer short, I would expect it to be a pretty easy fleshing line.

I have used 023/91 semen and love the females. Only had one 1 bull and he was a good calf. Females have udders and fleshing ability. Joe Jones told me back in 1999 that you could breed 023 to just about anything and would like the calves.

One reservation I have about the Briggs bull is his Marbling and Backfat EPDs. Carcass EPDs are somewhat of a concern to me b/c one day when my boys get older I want them to show a steer or two at some of our local county shows. One competition they kill the steer and judge the carcass. I would LOVE to shock some of our local breeders when they see an eared animal grade competitively with some of their stock.

Ultimately though, efficiency in the feedlot still remains our main goal.

It was a pretty good sale. Some animals I wish I had got in on the bidding but you know how it is, you're waiting on one and then she comes through and she either goes too high or she goes cheaper than you thought she would, etc. etc.

I did get a good look at lot #31. I was the second high bidder on her and I wish I had kept on going but no telling how high she would have gotten. She was a little weak on the topline but a really nice heifer. Hoover Case really worked the crowd to get every penny out of the crowd on her, as well as many others. I always liked him, he's pretty entertaining.

I did walk away with lots 26 (cow only), 30, 32, 42, and 46. I wish I would have gotten lot 31 instead of lot 32, but lot 31 came out first and it just didn't go how I had hoped.

Lot 30 has just a touch of roan on her rear leg which I think affected her price a little bit, but she'll make a cow...I hope.

The bulls didn't do that good, but they were young, average, and it is the wrong time of year. I don't know the avg's but a few females went for mid 3's and several in the 2s. Heifers stayed around 1600 to 2000. Of course some animals went around 1400 but generally that was because the sold the calf separate.

Their were a couple of surprises in my opinion. One little yogi cow went up into the mid 2's. She was a nice cow and I really liked her but I thought her size weuld have prevented her from going as high as she did. The biggest surprise imo was the black star5 heifer calf that was at the side of lot 26 (the cow I got). The calf went for 1500 and wasn't even weaned yet.

I hate it when the split them like that 'cuz now I got a cow in my lot that is bellaring away.

Sounds like you took home some good ones! That's a lot of lots, and I hope they turn out well for you.
