Let the Halter Breaking Begin!

Took a few pictures as we started halter breaking two heifers today. This is a first for us. Hershey (pure gert) took to it pretty well. Both heifers are gentle. How many afternoons a week should we work with them? I also threw a picture of another gert x hereford heifer I haven't shown on here yet. She has a very white face and one red patch around an eye.

The more work you put in the first week the easier it will be for the rest of the process. Once you have them halter trained they are broke for life.

Knersie is so right once they are broke they are broke for life! Our son showed a heifer one year did ok with her put her out in the pasture after show season to be a cow, she got a foot abcess eight years later we got her in the chute put a halter on her and led her to the trailer first time she had the halter on since she had been turned out eight years earlier. I can't remember why we put the dang halter on other than to see if she would still lead but we did I have to admit I was a bit shocked.

Worked the pure bred gert again tonight was able to get halter on by hand. She is doing great. The hereford cross let me put halter on for first time. Once it on she was like a bucking bull for a minute. She settled in and I worked her a little. Hope a few more sessions gets them broke.

the more time they spent being tied up and fighting the halter without getting anywhere the better.

I haven't tried tying them up. The little one doesn't fight hater at all just stubborn on the leading part. Bigger calf settled in to halter quick and just pulled against the lead. It will be interesting to see if bigger calf lets me halter her next time. I just did it in middle of pasture last time . Probably will put her up this time. Thanks for help.
