There he is getting a good scrub from momma. I still like him. The top one looks like He-Man, he's gonna be a muscular dude. Enjoyed seeing all your pics, been wanting to take some and post too but just ain't done it. Fall has been so late arriving here, finally got a little rain so I got some Ryegrass spread although a month later than I wanted. Flies are bad for it being October here. Wouldn't mind having a frost to some extent.

Oh yeah. They are the toughest to get pictures of. But I have noticed a problem. One has an umbilical hernia. I need to get her in and tie that off.
 
That was great photography, catching that tongue out!!! Looks good. We are about peak color right now. Have had numerous frosts - as low as 26F, but our days (right now) are getting up to 70F. Beautiful!!
Family is here from RI and we are going out to check tree stands - cut down limbs/brush. Worker bee weekend!!

Here is a picture from today. The cow is doing a fantastic job and the bond is as strong as a log chain. So far, they are not pulling her down.

I concur, there is not much weight between the belly and the ground.

How are you going to tie it off?
What is the size of the opening of the umbilical ring?
Have seen smaller hernias heal spontaneously...hopefully this is the case. Be careful that it is not infected or that intestines are not strangulated ;-)

Thanks. When I posted that, I had not examined her. Yesterday, I did. I also have discussed it with Ken (wbvs58).

The opening is very small about a finger. I could not feel any intestinal tissue in the naval pouch. It feels more liquid. Which could be infection but I would guess it is not. Ken suggested using safety pins and an elastic band to seal it. I am uncertain without further examination as to the exact diagnosis.

Alison - the outcome.

I got the calf in the Sweep a second time. I palpated the naval sac. I thought I could feel some tissue this time in the naval sac. It didn't take me long to figure out that I could not hold the calf on her back.

So I made an appointment for this morning with the vet who would not only be an extra set of hands but might have some sedatives.

After his exam, he confirmed that the opening was no more than a finger. He did think there is some intestinal tissue in the naval pouch. His conclusion was to do nothing and watch it for another 4 weeks. He believes it will heal on it's own and the intestinal tissue will pull into the abdominal cavity.
 
That sounds positive...hope she heals up :D

If you like you could put a band of elastoplast around her body. At the hernia area place a bit of cotton wool or padding that will not put too much pressure on the opening...but just enough, under the elastoplast. Use a broad one like this -


Mother may try and get it off though ;-)
