Lamb Fence stretcher PICS from RCP

I don't mean to steal this thread, but on this subject, can anyone explain how to use a " Lamb Wire Fence Co. stretcher made in Adrian Michigan. I bought it on ebay, and can't figure it out thanks! rcp

If I had to guess, I'd say the 5-pointed deal on the side of the ratchet wheel will grab a piece of barbed wire and roll up a little of it.

ETA: Thinking about it more, I bet it doesn't roll it up, but just passes it through by grabbing the knots while the wire rides down in the groove.

ETA, Again: Maybe the 5-point deal feeds a chain of some type through if not the wire directly.

That's what I was thinking. Hang it on the wall, that would be cheaper than the ER visit.

Looks to me as if you just hung it on the fence it would stretch it. When I was a kid we used a Handy Man Jack alot to stretch wire, I would have tried anything to get out of tote'n that jack.
 
Looks to me like you attach the wire to the small side and use the ratchet to walk up a link of chain. Looks like a knuckle buster to me.

Had to study the picture and Vkey's post a while before I saw it. Wonder if you could still find chain that will work with it.
 
:lol2: Even a blind squirrel gets lucky every now and then.

I think you could. At first I thought it might use that rectangular chain like on the old planters but the more I looked at it I think regular chain would cam into the sprockets and hold. I do think it could bite you though but folks back then were pretty smart so it probably works better than I imagine. Nice find though.

Probably worked better than taking a hold and leaning back with your foot against the post whilst Junior or Mama tried to nail it off... :lol: I guess it is old enough that a common type of chain for the time would work.
 
Thanks for all the ideas, it isn't that heavy, and I would like to use it, what about using trace chains ( long links ) ???? anyway back to the drawing board, appreciate all your help. RCP
 
I am busy tightening up a delapidated fence (should actually replace old wire wth new but....it's all gonna come out soon) and use an ancient Come Along that belonged to my grandfather, it does a good job! I thought I would post some pics of it and that someone maybe able to tell us how to operate RCP's lamb fence stretcher. It has me stumpted and that's a bit annoying :shock: .
I tend to agree with jkwilson's ideas. I don't think it needs a chain, it seems that the sprocket will grip the wire. Perhaps the wire is threaded under the winch, around the pole and then back, a couple of turns around the sprocket and then the rachet is worked. Uh, but then the barbs are gonna hook on the pole!

This come along is simple, the cable is attached to the pole, the wire gripped in the jaws and the rachet worked by turning the winch.....

Cant quite see enough from pics 2, 3 &4 . but the back end of it might be where the wire threads through and is grabbed from . The fromt ratchet wheel lookslike a chain to the post feeds in there and is tightened up . wire end can then be tied around the post.

I have a couple that work on a similar principle with the chain round the post , the tensioner walks up the chain pulling the fence wire with it toward the post,
