Klien grass

Help Support CattleToday:

Yup, it holds up better than anything else I know of with the exception of King Ranch bluestem, and it doesn't produce much hay. I still have stands of kleingrass going strong that were planted well over 30 years ago (probably 40 now that I think about it; I seem to lose track of time more as I get older).

It will stay green later in the fall than any other summer grass in our part of the country too. I remember being in the field raking some of it in December decades ago. A cold front came in after it was cut and it got pretty cold. I'd rake a while until I got ahead of the baler, then go sit in the truck with my Uncle John and drink whiskey to try to warm up before going out to rake a few more rounds.

Anyone seeding this grass in the southeast? I see where it's listed as growable in Georgia on USDA site, but looks like sandy soils only?
