I bought a Chiangus bull back in October. He came with a sperm count of course. I kept him up a few weeks to make sure he knew he was home, and where the feed was at. He's bred 3 cows since he's been turned out, and all three have come back in heat. I haven't seen him the act to know for sure, but I think he must have an issue. There is a chance, that it's the 3 cows, but I seriously doubt it on 2 of them. They are 2 of my most reliable breeders. I sure was looking forward to getting some calves out of him, he was a beauty to behold.

Why not take him in and get him checked? A lot of things could have happened since you got him. Seen some broken penis cases that will really mess up a breeding season! Around here, a breeding soundness exam, including a Trich test, is about $75. Well worth the waiting and worrying, in my opinion!

Semen check only tells you if his semen is good. Breeding soundness exam is best done in the pasture with cows getting bred. I would be looking for a different bull.

Routine 'breeding soundness exam' only affirms that, on the day the bull was tested, all his equipment(scrotal circumference measured, testicles, prostate, and seminal vesicles palpated, and penile extension noted) was in working order, and the semen sample obtained met minimum qualifications considered adequate to get most cows pregnant. Actually seeing the bull service a cow successfully would be ideal, but is usually not done as part of the routine exam.
After the day the BSE was performed, all bets are off - anything could have happened; infection, high temps, low temps 'broken penis', etc. Physical unsoundness - bad joints, bad feet, etc., can certainly keep a fertile bull from getting the job done.
I've seen some 2-yr olds that took a while to 'get the hang of it' - they're all interested and amorous, but may mount the wrong end of the cow, etc.
Another BSE may be in order. Certainly, if these cows cycle in again, the likelihood that there's something wrong is pretty strong.

Maybe it would be good time to ask the other guy few questions to see if his cows are bred or open. If some of his cows comes up open, replace your bull with a fertile bull of same breed or prehaps a fullblood Chi bull.Bigfoot":42m624om said:

Also this is bad time of year around here to be looking for a new herd bull. My hiefer bull ain't right for cows. I've got half intrest in a bull. It's at the other guys house breeding his fall calvers.

Any calf is better than no calf. Would rather bring in something i wouldn't normaly use as to let my cows get to far off there calving time.

Hi Bigfoot, I just want you to know that it always sucks to be in a situation where you don't have the leverage you wish you had and you have to tell someone something that they do not really want to hear. I had this same feeling with my bull when I got the papers and saw he was a potential carrier of 3 genetic defects. I now blame myself for not doing a better job on the purchase end. My bull is clean so I came out OK except for knowing I could have done better!
